octagon-api-smoke-test

octagon-api-smoke-test is a skill for Claude Code from OctagonAI/octagon-mcp-server. It costs 44 tokens per session (357 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A configuration check for the Octagon plugin and its connected tools. It runs small test requests to confirm that authentication, service settings, and tool access work.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to test general Octagon requests, deep research requests, and—when relevant—prediction-market requests and historical market data access.
Why use it?
It helps distinguish a setup problem from a service, entitlement, or input problem before deeper work begins. Failures are classified so troubleshooting can focus on the likely cause.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00044 $0.00357
Opus 5 $0.00022 $0.00179
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00071
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00036

Security

Grade A, and why

octagon-api-smoke-test scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Octagon API Smoke Test

Use this skill to confirm that the Claude plugin and Octagon MCP are configured correctly.

Smoke test sequence

  1. Run a simple octagon-agent request
  2. Run a simple octagon-deep-research-agent request
  3. If a Kalshi URL is available, run octagon-prediction-markets-agent
  4. If an event ticker is available, run prediction_markets_history

MCP calls

General agent:

{
  "server": "octagon-mcp",
  "toolName": "octagon-agent",
  "arguments": {
    "prompt": "Give me a one-sentence summary of Apple's latest quarter."
  }
}

Deep research:

{
  "server": "octagon-mcp",
  "toolName": "octagon-deep-research-agent",
  "arguments": {
    "prompt": "Research the current AI infrastructure spending cycle in one short paragraph."
  }
}

Failure triage

  • Missing auth or invalid key: check plugin api_key
  • Unexpected environment or staging issue: check api_base_url
  • Prediction market failures mentioning Kalshi URL: supply a valid Kalshi market URL
  • Credit or entitlement failures: report the exact error and stop

Success criteria

  • At least one Octagon tool returns usable text
  • Tool failures, if any, are classified clearly as config, entitlement, input, or service issues
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
