Getting it into your agent
One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.
| Model | Per session | Once invoked |
|---|---|---|
| Fable 5.1 | $0.00093 | $0.01101 |
| Opus 5.5 | $0.00037 | $0.00440 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $0.00019 | $0.00220 |
| Haiku 4.5 | $0.00009 | $0.00110 |
Grade A, and why
octen-research scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.
A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.
Nothing flagged
None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.
How it starts
The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 104 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.
Octen Research
Multi-source research on Octen. The shape is always the same: fan out, filter, ground, then synthesize — never a single search dressed up as a report.
When this skill applies
Use it when the answer needs coverage: several entities, several angles, or a claim that must hold across sources.
Do not use it for a single fact, a single entity, or a page you already have
the URL for — those are one search or one extract. Routing for those lives in
the octen-web-search skill.
Before searching: resolve time
A relative window ("recent", "last quarter", "past 6 months") is not a filter until it becomes two timestamps. Take today's date from your environment context, work out the bounds, and state them before the first call — an approximate window silently changes what the fan-out covers.
Pass them as start_time / end_time, or use time_range when one of the coarse
windows (day / week / month / year) is exactly what was asked for.
Step 1 — fan out
One broad_search with the whole question. Do not pre-split it into
sub-queries; decomposition is what the tool does.
Set max_queries to the scope:
| Scope | max_queries |
|---|---|
| Focused comparison, 2–3 entities | 3–5 |
| Multi-facet research | 5–10 |
| Landscape scan | 10–20 |
| Exhaustive survey | 20–30 |
For a question about recent events, reach for news_search instead. Narrow with
include_domains when the credible sources are known (arxiv.org, a vendor's
docs domain), and exclude_domains to drop content farms.
Results come back grouped per sub-query and are not deduplicated — the same URL can appear under several sub-queries. Dedupe by URL before counting anything.
Step 2 — filter before you read
Judge candidates from the highlights, not by fetching everything. Drop duplicates,
listicles, and pages that only restate the query. extract is the expensive step;
spend it on the handful that carry real evidence.
Step 3 — ground
extract the survivors, up to 20 URLs in one call. Leave query unset — this
step exists to read the page, and setting query returns ranked excerpts instead
of the body, which is the opposite of grounding. Each result carries category
and page_structure — use them to throw out login walls and nav pages before
spending context on what you fetched. Retry failed or empty extracts with
mode: "advanced".
What this file has done since we first saw it
Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

octen-research is a skill published in the GitHub repository Octen-Team/octen-mcp (23 stars, last pushed 8d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 93 tokens to every session and 1,101 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-16.
