octostore

octostore is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from octostore/octostore.io. It costs 21 tokens per session (1,828 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A coordination tool for giving one agent control of a shared role or one exact work item. An agent is an automated worker that can perform tasks for a coding project.

In plain words
What is it for?
Choosing a single coordinator for a group of agents or temporarily reserving one specific item for one worker.
Why use it?
It prevents multiple independent agents from changing the same task or taking conflicting actions at once. Ownership must be confirmed before changes, deployments, or merges.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00021 $0.01828
Opus 5 $0.00010 $0.00914
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00366
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00183

Security

Grade B, and why

octostore scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Asks for rootmediumPrivilege escalation

A mod that escalates privileges can change anything on the machine, not only the project.

Coordinate agent work with OctoStore

Use OctoStore only when two or more independent processes might act on the same role or work item.

Choose exactly one primitive:

  • Election — one live coordinator for a group. The hosted path needs no login.
  • Lock — one temporary owner for one exact item. Locks require an authenticated hosted or self-hosted OctoStore.

Acquire authority before creating a branch, changing files, calling a side-effecting tool, deploying, or merging. Treat lost, uncertain, a missing response, or an unexpected hold-process exit as not owned. Stop issuing side effects and ask the supervisor to cancel or fence the worker.

First result: one shared hosted election

Create one room outside the candidates:

octostore election create --json

Take the returned election_id and pass the same ID to every candidate. Never let each candidate create its own room for the same role.

Each candidate provides an executable worker and starts the installed supervisor with a unique candidate ID:

octostore-supervisor election "$OCTOSTORE_ELECTION" "$AGENT_ID" "$AGENT_WORKER" -- \
  octostore election hold "$OCTOSTORE_ELECTION" \
    --candidate "$AGENT_ID" --ttl 30 \
    --acquire-timeout 60 --json

Set AGENT_WORKER to the protected executable before running this command. The supervisor starts it only after a leader event and does not publish terminal lifecycle output until group containment completes. A waiting event means another candidate leads. On lost, uncertain, malformed output, or unexpected exit, stop work immediately. A hold process never reacquires after it has lost authority; start a new supervised attempt only under host policy.

The hosted authority defaults to https://api.octostore.io. Use --server or OCTOSTORE_URL only when all candidates intentionally share another authority. Election hold receives a secret leader capability, so custom authorities must use HTTPS or loopback HTTP; only an explicitly approved development setup may use --allow-insecure-http.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

octostore is a skill published in the GitHub repository octostore/octostore.io (50 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 21 tokens to every session and 1,828 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (asks for root). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
