devutils

A collection of local developer utilities for everyday text and data tasks, including encoding, hashing, JSON, dates, regular expressions, and schedule expressions.

In plain words
What is it for?
Encoding Base64, creating UUIDs and ULIDs, hashing values, decoding JWT contents, checking cron schedules, converting timestamps, formatting or validating JSON, and testing regular expressions.
Why use it?
It avoids writing small one-off scripts or looking up separate tools for routine transformations and checks.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00034 $0.00370
Opus 5 $0.00017 $0.00185
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.00074
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00037

Measured yesterday against content hash 223c093c3895, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

devutils scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Developer Utilities via MCP

Use this skill for everyday developer utility tasks: encoding, hashing, JWT decoding, cron expressions, timestamps, JSON formatting, and regex testing. Zero auth required.

Available Tools

Category Tools
Encoding base64_encode, base64_decode
ID Generation uuid_generate, ulid_generate
Hashing hash (single algo), hash_all (all algos)
JWT jwt_decode (header, payload, expiry check)
Cron cron_explain, cron_validate, cron_next
Timestamps timestamp_to_iso, iso_to_timestamp, timestamp_now
JSON json_format, json_minify, json_validate
Regex regex_test

Key Patterns

  • jwt_decode shows header, payload, and checks if expired — does NOT verify signatures
  • hash defaults to SHA-256; hash_all runs md5, sha1, sha256, sha384, sha512 at once
  • cron_next shows the next N scheduled run times — useful for validating cron schedules
  • uuid_generate can create multiple UUIDs in one call (pass count parameter)
  • json_validate reports whether input is valid JSON and its root type (object, array, etc.)
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

devutils is a skill published in the GitHub repository ofershap/mcp-server-devutils (3 stars, last pushed 5mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 34 tokens to every session and 370 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
