strategic-compact

strategic-compact is a skill for Claude Code from OkminLee/everything-claude-code-ios. It costs 28 tokens per session (312 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for preserving important context when an agent's conversation is shortened. Context compaction means reducing conversation history so work can continue within a limited space.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it before or during compaction to record session state and decide when a conversation should be condensed.
Why use it?
It helps prevent losing current tasks, changed files, unresolved issues, design decisions, and user feedback during compaction.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00028 $0.00312
Opus 5 $0.00014 $0.00156
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00062
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00031

Measured 6d ago against content hash f493c99c025a, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-06, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

strategic-compact scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (suggest-compact.js, suggest-compact.sh), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Strategic Compact

Guide for managing context window compaction without losing critical information.

When to Activate

  • When edit count reaches threshold (tracked by suggest-compact.js hook)
  • Before manual /compact invocation
  • When PreCompact hook fires

Preservation Checklist

Before any compaction, ensure these are preserved (written to session state or mentioned in compact summary):

  1. Current tasks — what is being worked on right now, including task IDs
  2. Changed files — list of files modified in this session and why
  3. Unresolved issues — blockers, open questions, pending decisions
  4. Architecture decisions — choices made during this session with rationale
  5. User feedback — corrections, preferences, or approach changes the user requested

Compaction Timing

The suggest-compact.js hook tracks edit count via a temp file:

  • 15 edits: first suggestion ("Consider compacting to preserve context")
  • 30 edits: stronger suggestion
  • Every 15 edits thereafter: repeated suggestion

PreCompact Behavior

When PreCompact fires, the hook should:

  1. Read current session state from ~/.claude/sessions/
  2. Output preservation checklist items to stderr as reminders
  3. Save a snapshot to the session file before compaction proceeds
Files

What ships with it

2 files beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

strategic-compact is a skill published in the GitHub repository OkminLee/everything-claude-code-ios (58 stars, last pushed 5mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 28 tokens to every session and 312 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
