What it actually says

Verification Loop

Sequential verification workflow after .swift file changes.

When to Activate

  • After implementing a feature or fixing a bug
  • Before committing changes
  • When strict hook profile triggers build-check automatically

Verification Steps

Execute in order. Stop at the first failure, fix, then restart from that step.

Step 1: Build

Detect project type and run appropriate build command:

  • Swift Package: swift build
  • Xcode project: xcodebuild -project <name>.xcodeproj -scheme <name> build
  • Xcode workspace: xcodebuild -workspace <name>.xcworkspace -scheme <name> build

Step 2: Test

Find and run tests related to changed files:

  1. For each changed file Foo.swift, look for:
    • FooTests.swift
    • FooSpec.swift
    • Files in Tests/ directory with matching module name
  2. Run only related tests (not full suite) for fast feedback:
    • SPM: swift test --filter FooTests
    • Xcode: xcodebuild test -only-testing:<target>/FooTests
  3. If no related tests found, warn but do not block

Step 3: Lint

Run SwiftFormat in lint mode if installed:

swiftformat --lint <changed-files>

If swiftformat is not installed, skip with a warning.

Rules

  • Each step MUST pass before proceeding to the next
  • On failure: fix the issue, then restart from the failed step (not from step 1)
  • Run only changed-file-related tests, not the entire test suite
  • Build and lint failures are blocking; missing test files are warnings only
