model-selection

model-selection is a skill for Claude Code from olehsvyrydov/AI-development-team. It costs 100 tokens per session (1,294 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A model-selection skill for choosing an AI model tier for each piece of work. It compares using a more capable, expensive model with using a cheaper, faster one based on the task and how its result will be checked.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it before launching agents or workflows, reviews, research sweeps, or large repetitive tasks to decide where stronger models are needed and where lower-cost ones are sufficient.
Why use it?
It helps avoid spending a high-cost model on work that a compiler, test, schema, or later check can verify. It also identifies work where model judgement is the final quality check.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00100 $0.01294
Opus 5.5 $0.00040 $0.00518
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00020 $0.00259
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00129

Security

Grade A, and why

model-selection scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Which model, and why

The wrong question is "how important is this task?" — everything feels important. The right question is about the shape of the work.

The decisive test: is there a cheap verifier downstream?

If a mistake in this output would be caught mechanically — by a compiler, a test, a schema, a deterministic checker, a later verification pass — a cheaper model is usually correct. The verifier is the quality control; the generator only has to get close. Wasting a frontier model on work that is checked for free buys nothing.

If this output IS the last line of defence — nothing downstream can tell whether it is wrong — spend the strong model. When the model is the verifier, its judgement is the product.

Everything below follows from that one test.

Spend the most capable model on

  • Novel design with interacting constraints. Several forces pulling against each other (a transaction boundary against an external store, an authorization model against an inheritance hierarchy), where the failure is a subtle wrong trade-off rather than a broken build.
  • Adversarial verification where a false negative is expensive. Data-loss paths, authorization, money, migrations. The job is to refute a plausible claim — precision work, and nothing catches a wrong "this is fine".
  • Root-causing a defect that survived cheaper attempts. If two passes have already failed, the problem is not effort, it is depth. Escalate rather than retry.
  • Reasoning about validity. Experiment design, threats to validity, whether an inference actually follows from the evidence. This is the work most damaged by a confident, shallow answer.
  • Consequences invisible at the edit site. "What else does this change break?" is exactly the class cheap models miss and the class that costs most.
  • Anything that will be published or acted on without further checking — an architecture decision, a claim in an article, a security conclusion.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

model-selection is a skill published in the GitHub repository olehsvyrydov/AI-development-team (17 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 100 tokens to every session and 1,294 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-19.
