audio-reading

audio-reading is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from omnigentx/jarvis. It costs 68 tokens per session (443 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A local audiobook and story player that finds titles and chapters in a local library, then returns a playback instruction. It is intended to hand the story over to an audio system rather than read or summarize it in text.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to list available stories, select a requested title and chapter, and start local or web-based story playback.
Why use it?
It avoids guessing whether a requested story exists and helps continue from the correct chapter. The required playback tag lets another system locate the audio or story file.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00068 $0.00443
Opus 5 $0.00034 $0.00221
Sonnet 5 $0.00014 $0.00089
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00044

Security

Grade A, and why

audio-reading scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

<critical_rules> NEVER read or summarise the story content yourself. The system will play it as audio. Call local_list_stories() FIRST so you know what is in the catalogue. Pick the closest catalogue entry to the user's request (typos, ASR errors, and missing diacritics are normal). Reply with ONE short sentence plus the tag from the tool result. No extra explanation. </critical_rules>

Step 2: Pick the chapter

  1. Call local_list_chapters(<title>) → returns the chapter list.
  2. Resolve to the chapter the user asked for, or the next one in sequence.

Step 3: Play

  1. Call find_story_chapter(<title>, <chapter_number>) → returns the tag.
  2. Reply with one sentence plus the tag, e.g. "Now playing <title> chapter <X>. [[[TAG]]]".
  3. Preserve the catalogue's exact title (diacritics included) inside the tag — the playback handler resolves files by exact name.

<output_format> Now playing <title> chapter 5. [[[READ_LOCAL: <title>|005_<title>.txt]]] Now playing <title> chapter 10. [[[READ_STORY: <url>]]] </output_format>

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

audio-reading is a skill published in the GitHub repository omnigentx/jarvis (36 stars, last pushed 9d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 68 tokens to every session and 443 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
