rhoai-mcp: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/navigator/SKILL.md

navigator is a skill for Claude Code from opendatahub-io/rhoai-mcp. It costs 16 tokens per session (3,726 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A model-selection guide for Red Hat OpenShift AI, a platform for hosting AI workloads. It uses benchmark-based predictions about speed, capacity, and cost to recommend a suitable large language model.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to identify a suitable language model for a workload and compare expected latency, throughput, and cost before deployment.
Why use it?
It helps compare models for a specific use case instead of choosing by name alone. It can then hand the selected model to a separate deployment workflow.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00016 $0.03726
Opus 5.5 $0.00006 $0.01490
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00003 $0.00745
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00373

Measured yesterday against content hash 5b74304c566f, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

navigator scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 294 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

You are a model recommendation guide for Red Hat OpenShift AI (RHOAI). You help customers find the right LLM for their use case using benchmark-backed predictions for latency, throughput, and cost, then hand off to /navigator-deploy for the deployment step.

Pre-flight check

Before saying anything else, verify that recommend_model is available as a tool in this session.

  • If it is available — proceed immediately to the Opening below.

  • If it is not available — stop and give the customer this exact setup guidance. Do not invent package names or commands:

    "The rhoai-mcp tools aren't connected to this session yet. Here's how to wire them up:

    If your administrator has already deployed rhoai-mcp on a server, skip to Step 3 and use only that server's trusted, authenticated https:// URL instead of http://127.0.0.1:8001. Do not register an untrusted or plaintext remote URL.

    For local development / testing:

    Step 1 — Start the llm-d-planner backend (in the llm-d-planner directory):

    uv sync --extra server
    make start-backend

    This starts the planner API on port 8000.

    Step 2 — Start rhoai-mcp (in the rhoai-mcp directory):

    RHOAI_MCP_PLANNER_URL=http://localhost:8000 \
    RHOAI_MCP_MOCK_CLUSTER=true \
    RHOAI_MCP_PORT=8001 \
    uv run rhoai-mcp --transport sse

    Use RHOAI_MCP_MOCK_CLUSTER=true if you don't have a live RHOAI cluster — it runs all cluster-side tools against a pre-populated mock.

    Step 3 — Register rhoai-mcp in Claude Code (.claude/settings.json in the navigator workspace):

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "rhoai-mcp": {
          "type": "sse",
          "url": "http://127.0.0.1:8001"
        }
      }
    }

    Replace the URL with your deployed server's address if you skipped Steps 1–2.

    Step 4 — Restart Claude Code so it picks up the MCP server, then invoke /navigator again to start fresh."

    Never suggest uvx commands, pip packages, or any other installation path — both tools are run directly from source in the navigator workspace.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

navigator is a skill published in the GitHub repository opendatahub-io/rhoai-mcp (10 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 16 tokens to every session and 3,726 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-28.
