shopify-api-graphql

shopify-api-graphql is a skill for Claude Code from OrcaQubits/agentic-commerce-skills-plugins. It costs 47 tokens per session (1,284 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to Shopify's GraphQL Admin and Storefront APIs, which let applications request store data in structured queries. The Admin API is for server-side store management, while the Storefront API is for customer-facing browsing, carts, and checkout.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to manage products, orders, customers, fulfillment, and metafields through the Admin API, or build custom storefront browsing, carts, checkout, and customer accounts through the Storefront API.
Why use it?
It helps select the correct API and avoid mixing private administrative operations with public storefront work. It also explains versioning, query-cost limits, bulk operations, and cursor-based paging.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00047 $0.01284
Opus 5 $0.00023 $0.00642
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00257
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00128

Security

Grade A, and why

shopify-api-graphql scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Shopify GraphQL APIs

Before writing code

Fetch live docs:

  1. Fetch https://shopify.dev/docs/api/admin-graphql for Admin API schema
  2. Fetch https://shopify.dev/docs/api/storefront for Storefront API schema
  3. Web-search site:shopify.dev graphql api versioning for current API versions

Two APIs

Admin API (Server-Side)

Full CRUD on all store resources:

  • Endpoint: https://{store}.myshopify.com/admin/api/{version}/graphql.json
  • Auth: X-Shopify-Access-Token header
  • Use for: product management, order processing, customer data, metafields, fulfillment
  • Rate limit: cost-based, max 1,000 points per query. Restore rate varies by plan (100 pts/s Standard, 200 Advanced, 1,000 Plus)

Storefront API (Client-Side)

Read-heavy access for custom storefronts:

  • Endpoint: https://{store}.myshopify.com/api/{version}/graphql.json
  • Auth: X-Shopify-Storefront-Access-Token header
  • Use for: product browsing, cart operations, checkout, customer account
  • Rate limit: cost-based (separate budget from Admin API)

API Versioning

Quarterly releases: YYYY-MM (January, April, July, October)

  • Each version supported for 12 months after release
  • unstable version available for testing upcoming changes
  • Always specify version in URL path

Admin API Examples

Query Products

query Products($first: Int!, $after: String) {
  products(first: $first, after: $after) {
    edges {
      node {
        id
        title
        handle
        status
        variants(first: 10) {
          edges {
            node {
              id
              title
              price
              sku
              inventoryQuantity
            }
          }
        }
        metafields(first: 5) {
          edges {
            node {
              namespace
              key
              value
              type
            }
          }
        }
      }
    }
    pageInfo { hasNextPage endCursor }
  }
}

Create Product

mutation ProductCreate($input: ProductInput!) {
  productCreate(input: $input) {
    product {
      id
      title
    }
    userErrors {
      field
      message
    }
  }
}

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
