dagster-definitions-to-orchestra

dagster-definitions-to-orchestra is a skill for Claude Code from orchestra-hq/orchestra-skills. It costs 98 tokens per session (2,284 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A conversion guide for turning Dagster jobs, schedules, retries, limits, and settings into the top-level structure of an Orchestra pipeline. Dagster is a framework for defining data workflows, and Orchestra represents those workflows in YAML configuration files.

In plain words
What is it for?
Converting Dagster Definitions, jobs, schedules, time zones, retries, timeouts, concurrency limits, configuration, and run tags into Orchestra pipeline settings.
Why use it?
It ensures scheduling and run behaviour are placed at the pipeline level instead of incorrectly attaching them to individual tasks. It also handles differences such as Dagster's five-part cron format versus Orchestra's six-part format.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00098 $0.02284
Opus 5 $0.00049 $0.01142
Sonnet 5 $0.00020 $0.00457
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00228

Security

Grade A, and why

dagster-definitions-to-orchestra scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Dagster Definitions / Job Structure -> Orchestra Pipeline Root

Overview

A Dagster project is described by a Definitions object that groups assets, jobs, schedules, sensors, and resources. Scheduling, retries, concurrency, and timeouts are set on jobs (via tags and RetryPolicy) and on ScheduleDefinition objects. None of these map to individual Orchestra tasks — they map to root-level fields on the Orchestra pipeline YAML. Apply this skill first, before any asset/op-level conversion, to establish the correct pipeline skeleton.

A useful rule of thumb: one Dagster job (or one cohesive asset selection driven by a schedule) -> one Orchestra pipeline.

Field Mapping Reference

ScheduleDefinition / @schedule -> schedule:

Dagster Orchestra Notes
cron_schedule="0 2 * * *" cron: '0 2 * * ? *' Dagster's cron is standard 5-field — convert to Orchestra's 6-field AWS EventBridge cron, do NOT copy verbatim
cron_schedule="@daily" cron: '0 0 ? * * *' Expand shorthand, then convert to 6-field
execution_timezone="Europe/London" timezone: Europe/London IANA timezone
ScheduleDefinition(job=...) one schedule: entry The schedule targets a job -> the pipeline
@schedule returning RunRequest(run_config=...) schedule[].run_inputs Map run config values to inputs
no schedule (manual / sensor only) (omit schedule:) Use webhook: {enabled: true} or sensors:/trigger_events:

Orchestra requires a 6-field AWS EventBridge cron (minute hour day-of-month month day-of-week year), not Dagster's standard 5-field cron_schedule. Exactly one of day-of-month/day-of-week must be ?. Passing a 5-field string fails validation with "Incorrect number of values ... 6 required, 5 provided."

Orchestra ScheduleModel:

schedule:
  - cron: '0 2 * * ? *'
    timezone: UTC
    name: nightly
    run_inputs: {}
    exclude: []

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
