catalog-authoring

catalog-authoring is a skill for Claude Code from oscal-compass/agentic-agile-authoring. It costs 56 tokens per session (606 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A workflow for creating and editing OSCAL catalogs and profiles. OSCAL is a machine-readable format for security and compliance controls, while a profile selects and customizes controls from a catalog.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to work with NIST SP 800-53 controls, create CSV editing templates, assemble profiles, and deploy catalog or profile content as Markdown.
Why use it?
It organizes the work of importing compliance materials, changing control parameters, and preparing them for publication. It helps avoid editing the wrong source files or guessing about catalog content.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00056 $0.00606
Opus 5 $0.00028 $0.00303
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00121
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00061

Security

Grade A, and why

catalog-authoring scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

OSCAL Agile Authoring

Purpose

Support custom catalog operations using NIST OSCAL catalogs and profiles, from parameter editing to Markdown deployment using trestle MCP tools.

Default Workspace

  • Auto-initialized: trestle workspace is automatically set up in current directory
  • No user input required: Users do not need to specify workspace directory

Main Tasks

  1. Research and import OSCAL assets (catalogs, profiles)
  2. Parameter editing and CSV template generation
  3. Markdown deployment and assembly
  4. Organizational distribution and data preparation

Key Principles

  • Must reference actual files (no guessing)
  • Do not read catalog.json directly → operate after splitting into md
  • Must use trestle MCP (do not use trestle CLI)
  • Do NOT use trestle_root parameter - omit it from all MCP calls
  • Use profile-based control selection - edit profile's include-controls to specify desired controls, not custom markdown files
  • Output in English (other languages allowed when specified by user)
  • When completing CSV, always confirm with user before proceeding to next step
  • Git operations are NOT performed by default → Only use git-workflow skill when user explicitly requests it

Default Workflow

Phase 1: Setup

Asset acquisition and structure organization. See setup.md for detailed instructions.

Phase 2: Editing & Embedding

Parameter editing to profile/catalog deployment. See editing.md for detailed instructions.

Rules

  • Always use trestle MCP tools, never CLI commands
  • Never use trestle_root parameter - omit it from all MCP tool calls
  • Use profile-based control selection - edit profile's include-controls to specify desired controls instead of creating custom markdown files
  • Confirm CSV content with user before parameter reflection
  • Maintain escape characters in markdown files
  • Use minimal, natural phrases for parameter values
  • Complete both profile and catalog regeneration steps
  • Reference actual files only, no assumptions
  • After md conversion, never read catalog.json directly

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

catalog-authoring is a skill published in the GitHub repository oscal-compass/agentic-agile-authoring (2 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 56 tokens to every session and 606 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
