agents-md

agents-md is a skill for Codex from OutlineDriven/odin-claude-plugin. It costs 47 tokens per session (5,182 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of agents-md, Apache-2.0.

A setup and review tool for repository instruction files used by coding agents, including AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md. It scores the instructions, checks for contradictions and stale content, and can propose a shorter pointer-based version.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to make a repository friendlier to Claude, Codex, or Cursor, audit existing instructions, or create a lean AGENTS.md. It can review supporting instruction files and apply approved refactoring.
Why use it?
It helps agents find the right project rules without being buried in long, generic, or conflicting documents. It also makes instruction changes reviewable before they are applied.

Skill for Codex

Written for Codex: agents/openai.yaml present. Also seen: reads .claude/ paths; mentions CLAUDE.md; mentions Claude Code.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00047 $0.05182
Opus 5 $0.00023 $0.02591
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.01036
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00518

Security

Grade A, and why

agents-md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Agents MD

Contract

Field Bound contract
Trigger User asks to set up a repo for agents, add AGENTS.md, audit CLAUDE.md, make a repo agent-friendly, score agent instructions, prune long/generic/stale instructions, or produce a lean pointer-only AGENTS.md
Authority Reversible local: writes only AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md (or a symlink to AGENTS.md when a target tool reads solely CLAUDE.md), CLAUDE.local.md, .claude/settings.json, .cursor/rules/*.mdc, Cursor hooks.json, and supporting instruction files after user confirmation; rollback is restoring the pre-edit snapshot. No remote mutation.
Side effect Local write to agent instruction files in the repo; no remote, credential, paid, published, deployed, or VCS mutation
Done Repo has working, scored, non-contradictory AGENTS.md for every target tool, plus a CLAUDE.md only when a target tool reads solely CLAUDE.md; every surviving line passes the three-check admission gate (non-discoverable, operationally significant, actionable); lean variants stay under 100 lines with pointer-only sections

Inputs

  • Required: the repository root path to audit or set up.
  • Optional: target tool set (defaults to Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor); audit mode (quick or full, defaults to quick); target grade (defaults to 10/12 for quick, A for full); target file path (defaults to root AGENTS.md, then CLAUDE.md if AGENTS.md absent); scope limit (root-only versus hierarchical); owner name for the lean commit attribution line.

Procedure

AGENTS.md files are execution contracts, not knowledge bases. Every line must help an agent execute correctly with minimal context. AGENTS.md is temporary guidance, not permanent configuration: when a recurring issue has a fixable root cause in code or tooling (a lint rule, test, script, or structural change), prefer that fix and keep only the minimum instruction needed until the root cause is solved.

  1. Discover files and survey discoverability. Find every agent instruction file in the repo:
    find . \( -name "AGENTS.md" -o -name "CLAUDE.md" -o -name "CLAUDE.local.md" \) 2>/dev/null | sort

Also check ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md (applies to every session). For monorepos, include workspace-level files. Audit each level independently: root holds universal rules, child files hold directory-specific rules. Then survey source files to learn what is already discoverable: README, PROJECT.md, cursor rules (.cursor/rules/ or .cursorrules), Copilot instructions (.github/copilot-instructions.md), GEMINI.md, CI/workflow files, package manager config, CONTRIBUTING.md, and docs/. Record what an agent can infer from these alone; anything discoverable need not be restated.
    • Done when: every instruction file is listed and the discoverability survey records what an agent can learn without AGENTS.md.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
