reindex

reindex is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from owrede/vault-memory. It costs 98 tokens per session (523 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command for rebuilding the search index of a vault, such as a collection of Obsidian notes. It can rebuild everything or update only notes that changed.

In plain words
What is it for?
Running full or incremental re-indexes, selecting a specific vault, and restoring current search results.
Why use it?
It refreshes search data after importing notes, changing embedding models, upgrading the memory system, or finding that the index is out of date.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00098 $0.00523
Opus 5 $0.00049 $0.00262
Sonnet 5 $0.00020 $0.00105
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00052

Measured 4d ago against content hash 5fc1c0783eb1, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

reindex scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (reindex.sh), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

/vmem:reindex — Rebuild the vector index

Wraps vault-memory index [--full] [--vault NAME] with a friendlier surface and progress reporting.

When to use

  • User says "/vmem:reindex", "rebuild the index", "re-embed the vault"
  • After a large note import — incremental catches up but full rebuilds typed-edge graph
  • After switching embedding models (different dim → fresh re-embed required)
  • After a v1 → v2 upgrade — the new graph signal (typed edges, mentions, hyperlinks) is empty until a full re-index runs
  • After /vmem:health reports notes-on-disk > notes-in-DB

Modes

Invocation Effect
/vmem:reindex Full re-index: every note re-parsed, every chunk re-embedded
/vmem:reindex --incremental Only re-embed notes whose hash changed since last run
/vmem:reindex --vault NAME Re-index a specific named vault instead of the current one

How to execute

bash "$CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR/.claude/skills/reindex/reindex.sh" [--incremental] [--vault NAME]

The wrapper:

  1. Resolves the vault name from ~/.vault-memory/config.toml by matching $CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR against canonical paths
  2. Invokes vault-memory index with the right flags
  3. Surfaces SQLITE_CONSTRAINT / migration crashes with the failing DB name (same crash-detection as /vmem:install checkpoint 6)
  4. Reports notes-in-DB before and after

What it does NOT do

  • Does not install vault-memory if missing — run /vmem:install first
  • Does not pull missing Ollama models — run /vmem:health to see what's missing
  • Does not touch the Obsidian plugin
Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

reindex is a skill published in the GitHub repository owrede/vault-memory (0 stars, last pushed 26d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 98 tokens to every session and 523 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
