analyzing-llm-rationale: Skill for Claude Code

.agents/skills/otel-expo-style/SKILL.md

otel-expo-style is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from pareelamre/analyzing-llm-rationale. It costs 33 tokens per session (584 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of otel-expo-style, MIT.

A set of conventions for adding OpenTelemetry monitoring to Expo and React Native mobile apps. Expo is a tool for building React Native apps, and OpenTelemetry records traces, logs, and measurements about app activity.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to monitor mobile app startup, network requests, and product actions such as submitting an order. It covers initialization order, mobile-compatible exporters, counters, and action traces.
Why use it?
It keeps monitoring compatible with supported mobile runtimes and preserves runtime checks so unsupported environments do not initialize incompatible code.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00033 $0.00584
Opus 5 $0.00016 $0.00292
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.00117
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00058

Security

Grade A, and why

otel-expo-style scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 82 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

OTel Expo Style

Preserve existing runtime guards. If the app avoids native SDKs in Expo Go or an unsupported runtime branch, initialize OTel only inside the supported branch.

const isExpoGo = process.env.EXPO_PUBLIC_RUNTIME === "expo-go";

if (!isExpoGo) {
  initObservability();
  Sentry.init({ dsn: process.env.EXPO_PUBLIC_SENTRY_DSN });
}

registerRootComponent(App);

In supported builds, call initObservability() before Sentry and before app registration/user code.

SDK Shape

Use native OTel JS APIs and browser/mobile-compatible providers/exporters. Do not create recordCounter, sendSuperlogSpan, or tracking-specific helper files.

export const tracer = trace.getTracer("mugline.mobile");
export const meter = metrics.getMeter("mugline.mobile");
export const ordersSubmitted = meter.createCounter("mug.orders.submitted");

Add automatic fetch/XHR instrumentation when compatible so API calls get spans without wrapping application code.

Product Actions

Wrap low-risk business operations with native active spans.

await tracer.startActiveSpan("mug.order.submit", async (span) => {
  try {
    span.setAttribute("tenant.id", tenantId);
    ordersSubmitted.add(1, { "tenant.id": tenantId, outcome: "success" });
  } catch (error) {
    span.recordException(error as Error);
    span.setStatus({ code: SpanStatusCode.ERROR });
    throw error;
  } finally {
    span.end();
  }
});

Configuration

Inline the endpoint and sl_public_ token directly in the observability module. The token is project-scoped, write-only, and intended to be safe in client bundles. Avoid EXPO_PUBLIC_* env vars for Superlog so the mobile build does not depend on deploy-time configuration.

const SUPERLOG_ENDPOINT = "https://intake.superlog.sh";
const SUPERLOG_PUBLIC_TOKEN = "sl_public_...";
const SERVICE_NAME = "mugline-mobile";

// The token MUST be sent as the `x-api-key` header. Ingest only reads
// `x-api-key` or `Authorization: Bearer <token>`; any other header name 401s.
function superlogHeaders(token: string): Record<string, string> {
  return { "x-api-key": token };
}

const exporter = new OTLPTraceExporter({
  url: `${SUPERLOG_ENDPOINT}/v1/traces`,
  headers: superlogHeaders(SUPERLOG_PUBLIC_TOKEN),
});

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
