hotpath_init_grafana

hotpath_init_grafana is a skill for Claude Code from pawurb/hotpath-rs. It costs 109 tokens per session (3,962 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A generator for a Grafana dashboard JSON file for a Rust application measured with hotpath. Grafana displays metrics collected by monitoring systems such as Prometheus in charts and panels.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create a dashboard file for an application that already exposes hotpath metrics and is already connected to Prometheus and Grafana.
Why use it?
It turns available performance measurements into panels that help explain slow requests, database and HTTP work, memory use, locks, queues, and worker activity. It does not configure the monitoring systems or import the dashboard.

About the project

hotpath-rs is a Rust profiler that measures where programs spend time, use CPU and memory, wait on I/O, and perform database, HTTP, or asynchronous operations. Rust developers use it to locate performance bottlenecks and inspect timing, allocation, and async-flow data.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00109 $0.03962
Opus 5.5 $0.00044 $0.01585
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00022 $0.00792
Haiku 4.5 $0.00011 $0.00396

Security

Grade A, and why

hotpath_init_grafana scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 315 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Initialize a hotpath Grafana dashboard

Build a Grafana dashboard on top of the metrics that hotpath exposes through its Prometheus endpoint. The dashboard is organized in performance layers: SQL queries and outbound HTTP calls attributed to the axum route that issued them, memory and time per request, then channels, locks, the Tokio runtime and threads. Each panel answers a concrete question instead of plotting raw series.

Scope

This skill only builds the dashboard JSON file. It does not configure Prometheus, Grafana or the app's metrics endpoint: no scrape jobs, data sources, auth tokens, Grafana API imports or Prometheus restarts. Those setups differ between projects (local, docker-compose, Kubernetes, Grafana Cloud, ...) and are owned by whoever runs the infrastructure, so the skill assumes they are already in place:

  • the app runs with the hotpath-prometheus feature and exposes /metrics;
  • Prometheus scrapes it with native histograms enabled;
  • Grafana has that Prometheus as a data source.

If any of these is missing, point the user to https://hotpath.rs/prometheus_grafana and continue with the dashboard; do not edit Prometheus or Grafana config, and do not change Cargo.toml features or deployment env vars.

Documentation

The hotpath docs are the reference for every metric, label and environment variable; this skill holds the procedure and the dashboard queries, which the docs do not have. Every page of https://hotpath.rs is served as markdown when requested with an Accept: text/markdown header:

curl -sL -H 'Accept: text/markdown' https://hotpath.rs/prometheus_grafana

Fetch https://hotpath.rs/prometheus_grafana before building the dashboard, and check every metric and label name a panel uses against its "Available metrics" tables instead of relying on memory. Keep -L (some pages redirect) and the header (there are no .md URLs). A #fragment is not sent to the server: fetch the whole page and find the heading.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

hotpath_init_grafana is a skill published in the GitHub repository pawurb/hotpath-rs (1,888 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 109 tokens to every session and 3,962 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-09.
