dependency-vet

dependency-vet is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Phaedra-Solutions/cursor-rules. It costs 86 tokens per session (2,925 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A package safety review for a dependency before adding it to a project.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to check whether the package exists under the exact name, whether the project already has an alternative, and whether adding it should be approved.
Why use it?
It helps catch misspelled or fake packages, abandoned maintenance, risky install scripts, ownership changes, license issues, and known advisories.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00086 $0.02925
Opus 5.5 $0.00034 $0.01170
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00017 $0.00585
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00293

Security

Grade A, and why

dependency-vet scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Not a fault in itself. Listed so you know the mod talks to something, and to what.

Dependency vet

When to use

  • Before adding any new dependency, or suggesting one in an answer.
  • When a dependency is replaced, or its source changes (new scope, fork, git URL).
  • When core/supply-chain tells you to check a package.

Version upgrades of existing dependencies go through security-audit or cve-check instead.

Before you start

  • Get the exact package name, ecosystem and the version you intend to add. Never vet a name you aren't sure of; ask the user.
  • Ask what the package is for. You need this for the "already covered" check.
  • These checks read public registry APIs over the network. They never install or run the package.
  • The examples use curl and jq. If jq isn't installed, read the JSON directly.

Steps

  1. Check whether you need it at all. Search the codebase and the existing manifest for something that already does the job, and check the language's standard library. If either covers the need, recommend that and stop.

  2. Confirm it exists under exactly this name. Query the registry (commands below). A 404 means it doesn't exist: never add it, and tell the user the name may be hallucinated. Existing isn't enough: attackers and defenders both register commonly hallucinated names (for example, react-codeshift is now a placeholder package).

  3. Check for typosquats. Compare the name with well-known packages that do the same job. Be suspicious of a one- or two-character difference, swapped or added separators (-, _, .), a missing or different scope, or a "-js"/"-py" suffix variant of a popular name. For npm, search for nearby names and compare downloads:

    curl -s "https://registry.npmjs.org/-/v1/search?text=crypto-js&size=5" | jq -r '.objects[] | "\(.package.name)\t\(.downloads.weekly // "?")"'

  4. Check for known malware and advisories (the version-less query returns every advisory, including MAL- malware entries):

    curl -s -X POST https://api.osv.dev/v1/query \
      -d '{"package":{"name":"PACKAGE","ecosystem":"npm"}}' | jq -r '.vulns[]? | "\(.id) \(.summary // "")"'

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

dependency-vet is a skill published in the GitHub repository Phaedra-Solutions/cursor-rules (4 stars, last pushed 2d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 86 tokens to every session and 2,925 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-11-01.
