freeze

freeze is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from pillip/claude-dev-kit. It costs 20 tokens per session (463 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A file-editing boundary that limits changes to one chosen directory. Reading files remains allowed elsewhere.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when fixing or developing one directory and want all file writes outside it to be blocked until the boundary is removed.
Why use it?
It prevents accidental edits to unrelated parts of a project while you work on a specific module.

Skill for Claude CodeCodex

Installs and runs on its own, but its text points at files inside its plugin — anything it tells you to read at a ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT} path is only there once the plugin is installed. Installing the plugin gets both.

Part of the claude-dev-kit plugin — 23 skills, 33 agents, 9 hooks shipped together

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00020 $0.00463
Opus 5 $0.00010 $0.00231
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00093
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00046

Measured 3d ago against content hash 01b780297cab, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

freeze scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (freeze_guard.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Freeze mode activated.

Setup

  1. Validate that $ARGUMENTS is a valid directory path. If not provided, ask the user which directory to freeze to.
  2. Resolve to an absolute path.
  3. Write the absolute path to .claude-kit/freeze-dir.txt in the repo root:
    mkdir -p .claude-kit && echo "<absolute-path>" > .claude-kit/freeze-dir.txt

  4. Report: "Freeze boundary set to: <path>. All Edit/Write operations outside this directory will be blocked."

Behavior

  • Read/Glob/Grep: Always allowed anywhere (read-only operations).
  • Edit/Write inside boundary: Allowed.
  • Edit/Write outside boundary: Hard-blocked with explanation.

Deactivation

To deactivate, remove the boundary file:

rm -f .claude-kit/freeze-dir.txt

Or end this conversation.

Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

freeze is a skill published in the GitHub repository pillip/claude-dev-kit (11 stars, last pushed 2d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 20 tokens to every session and 463 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
