deploy-searxng

deploy-searxng is a skill for Claude Code from pjt222/agent-almanac. It costs 82 tokens per session (1,822 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A deployment guide for running SearXNG, a self-hosted search engine that combines results from multiple providers, with Docker Compose and Nginx.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to configure search engines, publish the service behind a domain and HTTPS, store its settings, and keep it updated.
Why use it?
It helps you run a private search service without relying on one provider or sending searches through a tracking-focused service.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00082 $0.01822
Opus 5 $0.00041 $0.00911
Sonnet 5 $0.00016 $0.00364
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00182

Security

Grade A, and why

deploy-searxng scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Deploy SearXNG

Deploy a self-hosted SearXNG meta search engine with Docker Compose and Nginx.

When to Use

  • Setting up a private, self-hosted search engine
  • Aggregating results from multiple search providers without tracking
  • Running a search instance for a team or organization
  • Replacing reliance on a single search provider

Inputs

  • Required: Server or machine with Docker installed
  • Optional: Domain name for public access
  • Optional: SSL certificate or Let's Encrypt setup
  • Optional: Custom engine preferences

Procedure

Step 1: Create Project Structure

mkdir -p searxng/{config,nginx}
cd searxng

Step 2: Write Docker Compose File

docker-compose.yml:

services:
  searxng:
    image: searxng/searxng:latest
    container_name: searxng

      - CHOWN
      - SETGID
      - SETUID
    restart: unless-stopped
    networks:
      - searxng

    ports:
      - "8080:80"
    volumes:
      - ./nginx/nginx.conf:/etc/nginx/nginx.conf:ro
    depends_on:
      - searxng
    restart: unless-stopped
    networks:
      - searxng

networks:
  searxng:
    driver: bridge

Step 3: Configure SearXNG Settings

config/settings.yml:

use_default_settings: true

general:
  instance_name: "My SearXNG"
  privacypolicy_url: false
  contact_url: false

search:
  safe_search: 0

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

deploy-searxng is a skill published in the GitHub repository pjt222/agent-almanac (32 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 82 tokens to every session and 1,822 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
