handoff

handoff is a skill for Claude Code from pktikkani/agent-skills. It costs 37 tokens per session (466 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A handoff skill that records the current project state in a STATUS.md file for a later session.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when pausing work or handing a project to another agent, especially when you need a short snapshot of decisions, tests, gotchas, and important file locations.
Why use it?
It prevents the next session from having to reconstruct what was being worked on, what is broken, and what should happen next.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00037 $0.00466
Opus 5 $0.00018 $0.00233
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.00093
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00047

Security

Grade A, and why

handoff scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Handoff — write STATUS.md

Write (or fully overwrite) STATUS.md at the current project root — create it if absent. It is a SNAPSHOT, not a log: full overwrite every time, never append. Target ≤120 lines / ~1-2k tokens.

Template (fixed sections, in this order)

# STATUS — <project> — <YYYY-MM-DD>

## Now
What's in flight; the exact next 1-3 actions, with file paths.

## State
What works, what's broken, test status.

## Decisions this session
Only NEW decisions, each with a one-line why. Durable ones should graduate to
BLUEPRINT.md/ADRs — note explicitly when one should.

## Gotchas
Non-obvious traps discovered this session: env quirks, flaky commands, things
that look wrong but are right.

## Pointers
Key files:lines, running processes, external state (open PRs, pending tokens, ...).

Rules

  • Concrete over narrative: paths, commands, numbers — no prose recap of the conversation.
  • Nothing secret: no tokens/keys — reference their location instead (e.g. "creds in .env").
  • If the repo is git-tracked, commit STATUS.md alone with message handoff: <YYYY-MM-DD> ONLY if the user confirms.
  • Re-entry cost must stay under ~2k tokens. If the draft exceeds it, cut State/Decisions detail first — never Now/Gotchas.
  • Do not duplicate content already captured in other artifacts (BLUEPRINT.md, ADRs, PRDs, issues, commits, diffs) — reference them by path in Pointers.
  • If the user passed arguments, treat them as what the next session will focus on and weight Now accordingly.

Finish

Tell the user the file path and that the next session picks it up via the CLAUDE.md session-start rule.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

handoff is a skill published in the GitHub repository pktikkani/agent-skills (2 stars, last pushed 2d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 37 tokens to every session and 466 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
