idea-refine

idea-refine is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Plazmodium/odin-workflow. It costs 17 tokens per session (301 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A process for turning a rough idea into a specific proposal with a defined user, problem, outcome, limits, and success criteria.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when a request is vague, several solutions seem possible, or the scope and expected result need to be clarified before planning or coding.
Why use it?
It prevents implementation from starting with unclear goals or hidden trade-offs and reduces the chance of building the wrong solution.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00017 $0.00301
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.00151
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00060
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00030

Security

Grade A, and why

idea-refine scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

idea-refine

When To Use

  • The user has a rough concept, not a concrete request.
  • Goals, users, constraints, or success criteria are unclear.
  • Several possible solutions could satisfy the request.

Workflow

  1. Restate the idea in one sentence.
  2. Identify the target user, problem, and desired outcome.
  3. List constraints, non-goals, risks, and unknowns.
  4. Generate 2-3 plausible solution shapes.
  5. Compare tradeoffs briefly.
  6. Recommend the smallest viable direction.
  7. Ask only the questions needed to unblock a spec or implementation.

Anti-Rationalization

Excuse Rebuttal
"The idea is obvious." Obvious ideas often hide conflicting success criteria.
"I should start coding to discover the shape." Discovery code becomes accidental product code. Clarify first.
"Asking questions slows things down." One precise question is cheaper than building the wrong thing.

Verification

  • The proposal names the user, problem, outcome, constraints, and non-goals.
  • Open questions are explicit.
  • The recommended direction is smaller than the broadest possible solution.

Exit Criteria

  • The user or agent can write a spec with clear acceptance criteria.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
