claude-md-improver

A reviewer for CLAUDE.md files, which give Claude Code instructions and project context. It finds these files, checks their quality against templates, reports issues, and can apply targeted improvements after approval.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to audit, improve, or fix CLAUDE.md files and related Claude rules throughout a codebase.
Why use it?
It helps keep the instructions used by Claude Code accurate and useful across a repository. It also accounts for project rules, local overrides, and package-specific files in a monorepo, a repository containing multiple related projects.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00082 $0.01608
Opus 5 $0.00041 $0.00804
Sonnet 5 $0.00016 $0.00322
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00161

Security

Grade A, and why

claude-md-improver scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Reads agent configuration directorieslowAgent snooping

.claude/, .codex/, .gemini/ hold keys, settings and other credentials a mod has no legitimate need for.

find ./.claude/rules -name "*.md" 2>/dev/null

Downgraded: this mod is about security review, or the phrase is quoted, so it is likely naming the pattern rather than instructing it.

CLAUDE.md Improver

Audit, evaluate, and improve CLAUDE.md files across a codebase to ensure Claude Code has optimal project context.

This skill can write to CLAUDE.md files. After presenting a quality report and getting user approval, it updates CLAUDE.md files with targeted improvements.

Workflow

Phase 1: Discovery

Find all memory files in the repository:

# CLAUDE.md files
find . \( -name "CLAUDE.md" -o -name ".claude.md" -o -name ".claude.local.md" \) 2>/dev/null | head -50

# Project rules
find ./.claude/rules -name "*.md" 2>/dev/null

File Types & Locations:

Type Location Purpose
Project memory ./CLAUDE.md or ./.claude/CLAUDE.md Team-shared instructions (checked into git)
Project rules ./.claude/rules/*.md Modular, topic-specific project instructions
Local overrides ./.claude.local.md Personal/local settings (gitignored, not shared)
User memory ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md User-wide defaults across all projects
User rules ~/.claude/rules/*.md Personal modular preferences
Package-specific ./packages/*/CLAUDE.md Module-level context in monorepos

Rules Frontmatter:

Rules files support path-specific loading via frontmatter:

---
paths: src/api/**/*.ts,src/services/**/*.ts
---

Note: paths: uses comma-separated format, NOT YAML array syntax.

Note: Claude auto-discovers CLAUDE.md files in parent directories, making monorepo setups work automatically.

Phase 2: Quality Assessment

For each CLAUDE.md file, evaluate against quality criteria. See references/quality-criteria.md for detailed rubrics.

Quick Assessment Checklist:

Criterion Weight Check
Commands/workflows documented High Are build/test/deploy commands present?
Architecture clarity High Can Claude understand the codebase structure?
Non-obvious patterns Medium Are gotchas and quirks documented?
Conciseness Medium No verbose explanations or obvious info?
Currency High Does it reflect current codebase state?
Actionability High Are instructions executable, not vague?

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
