py-shiny: Skill for Claude Code

.agents/skills/memory-bank/SKILL.md

memory-bank is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from posit-dev/py-shiny. It costs 36 tokens per session (525 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for finding and maintaining a project's memory bank: contributor documents that describe its architecture, conventions, and development procedures.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it before exploring architecture or when finding, reading, updating, or creating contributor documentation for py-shiny.
Why use it?
It prevents architectural work from starting without reading the repository's existing guidance and helps keep that guidance organised.

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one. Also seen: installed under .agents/ (shared by several agents); mentions AGENTS.md.

This is posit-dev/py-shiny's own configuration. It tells Claude Code and Codex how to work on py-shiny itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything py-shiny configures →

About the project

Shiny for Python is a Python framework for building interactive web applications and data visualizations with reactive behavior. Data scientists and Python developers use it for prototypes as well as larger applications. Its bundled agent skills provide coding agents with Shiny documentation so they can create better Shiny applications.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00036 $0.00525
Opus 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00210
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00007 $0.00105
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00052

Measured 23d ago against content hash 8fa8c16ba587, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

memory-bank scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 23d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 50 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Memory Bank

The memory-bank/ directory at the repo root holds contributor-facing documentation for py-shiny: architecture, conventions, and step-by-step recipes. Each file covers one subsystem or workflow and starts with YAML frontmatter containing title and description.

This is distinct from shiny/.agents/skills/, which ships with the package and documents shiny's public API for app authors. See memory-bank/agentSkills.md for that boundary.

Finding and reading documents

Loading this skill is preparation, not completion of documentation discovery. Before exploring code, identify the relevant memory-bank docs and read their applicable sections.

List the catalog (titles and descriptions) with:

# posit-dev/assistant uses a list_memory_bank.mjs script for this catalog and
# for per-file heading outlines with line ranges and byte sizes. With only a
# handful of small docs here, grep does the same job; port that script if the
# memory bank grows large enough that outlines save real context.
grep -A1 -m1 '^title:' memory-bank/*.md
  • Read small, relevant documents directly. For larger ones, list their headings first (grep -n '^#' memory-bank/<file>.md) and read only the sections you need.
  • If titles and descriptions don't point at anything, search contents with task terms, related symbols, and synonyms (grep -rni <term> memory-bank/) before concluding no guidance exists.
  • Follow source-code references to verify current behavior; docs can lag the code.

Updating documents

Update a memory-bank file when:

  • You discover an architectural pattern or pitfall worth recording
  • You make a significant change to something a doc describes
  • The user asks to update the memory bank

Keep the frontmatter title and description in sync with the content.

Creating new documents

  1. Use camelCase naming (e.g., newFeatureSystem.md)
  2. Add YAML frontmatter with title and description; quote values that contain :
  3. If the doc should be read for a common task, add a pointer to it in AGENTS.md

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

memory-bank is a skill published in the GitHub repository posit-dev/py-shiny (1,767 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 36 tokens to every session and 525 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-15.
