new-skill

new-skill is a skill for Claude Code from press-pass/journalism-skills. It costs 17 tokens per session (287 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guided workflow for creating a new coding skill by collecting its name, purpose, instructions, and argument requirements, then generating a SKILL.md template.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to design a skill interactively and create its directory and instruction file in the specified journalism-skills plugin.
Why use it?
It provides a consistent starting point for defining a reusable skill instead of writing its structure from memory.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00017 $0.00287
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.00143
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00057
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00029

Security

Grade A, and why

new-skill scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

You are helping the user create a new skill. Ask the following questions one at a time, waiting for the user's response before proceeding:

  1. What should the skill be called? (This will be the directory name, kebab-cased.)
  2. What should this skill do? (A short description of its purpose.)
  3. What instructions should the skill give to Claude? (The prompt body — what should Claude do when this skill is invoked?)
  4. Does the skill need arguments from the user? (If yes, where should $ARGUMENTS be used in the prompt?)

Once you have all the answers, create the skill directory and SKILL.md file inside the skills/ directory of the journalism-skills plugin. The generated SKILL.md should follow this format:

---
description: <the description from question 2>
---

<the instructions from question 3, incorporating $ARGUMENTS if applicable>

If the skill produces output files, instruct it to write them to skill-output/<skill-name>/<YYYY-MM-DD_HH-MM-SS>/ within the journalism-skills plugin directory.

After creating the file, confirm the skill name and how to invoke it (e.g., /journalism-skills:skill-name).

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

new-skill is a skill published in the GitHub repository press-pass/journalism-skills (2 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 17 tokens to every session and 287 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
