aeo-competitor-monitor

aeo-competitor-monitor is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from psyduckler/aeo-skills. It costs 104 tokens per session (2,181 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A monitoring tool that tracks which competitor websites Gemini AI Overviews cite for selected prompts over time. It records citation frequency and snippets in an append-only JSON file and creates comparison reports.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to scan chosen prompts, track competitor domains, compare citation share over time, and review changes in the sources used by Gemini AI Overviews.
Why use it?
It shows how often competitors appear in AI-generated search answers instead of measuring competition only through ordinary search rankings. Repeated scans reveal changes in which sources Gemini retrieves and cites.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00104 $0.02181
Opus 5 $0.00052 $0.01091
Sonnet 5 $0.00021 $0.00436
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00218

Security

Grade A, and why

aeo-competitor-monitor scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (scripts/_shared.py, scripts/monitor.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Track which competitors get cited in AI Overviews — and how that changes over time.

Why This Matters

AI Overviews create a new competitive landscape. Influence happens at retrieval, not inside the model — the sources Gemini cites for your key prompts form the recurring retrieval set, and those are your real competitors. Gemini is search-first, searching before nearly every answer — influence compounds through repeated inclusion in this set. Tracking citation share over time reveals shifts in the recurring retrieval set:

  • Who's gaining ground — new content entering the recurring retrieval set
  • Who's losing ground — previously-cited pages dropping out of the candidate set
  • Market dynamics — how the retrieval set shifts with content updates, algorithm changes
  • Your relative position — where you stand in the candidate set vs competitors

Requirements

  • Gemini API key (free) — set as GEMINI_API_KEY env var
  • Python 3.9+
  • No pip dependencies (stdlib only)

Usage

Scan — Run a new competitive scan

# Scan two prompts, tracking three competitors
GEMINI_API_KEY="$GEMINI_API_KEY" python3 scripts/monitor.py scan \
--prompts "best SEO tools" "content optimization software" \
    --competitors acme.com surferseo.com semrush.com \
    --data-file monitor-data.json

# With custom run count
GEMINI_API_KEY="$GEMINI_API_KEY" python3 scripts/monitor.py scan \
    --prompts "best SEO tools" \
    --competitors acme.com surferseo.com \
    --data-file monitor-data.json \
    --runs 30

Report — Generate a comparison report

# Text report
python3 scripts/monitor.py report --data-file monitor-data.json

# JSON report
python3 scripts/monitor.py report --data-file monitor-data.json --output json

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
