aeo-freshness-decay-tracker

aeo-freshness-decay-tracker is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from psyduckler/aeo-skills. It costs 98 tokens per session (2,038 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A tracker that records how often Gemini cites or mentions your content as the content gets older. Citation rate means how often an answer includes your page as a source.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps measure citation changes over time, identify declining content, estimate when citations may disappear, and flag pages for updates.
Why use it?
It helps reveal when older pages are appearing less often because newer sources or changing searches replace them.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00098 $0.02038
Opus 5 $0.00049 $0.01019
Sonnet 5 $0.00020 $0.00408
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00204

Security

Grade A, and why

aeo-freshness-decay-tracker scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (scripts/_shared.py, scripts/track.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

AEO Freshness Decay Tracker

Source: github.com/psyduckler/aeo-skills Part of: AEO Skills Suite

Monitor when your content exits the recurring retrieval set — and catch decay before you disappear.

Background

Being cited once doesn't matter. Influence compounds through repeated inclusion in the recurring retrieval set — the group of sources Gemini consistently draws from when answering a prompt. But that set isn't static. As content ages, competitors publish fresher alternatives, and the model's search queries evolve, your pages can slip out of the candidate set entirely.

In a search-first system like Gemini, retrievability depends on alignment with the queries the model generates, comprehensive topic coverage, and freshness signals. When any of these degrade, your citation rate decays. This skill tracks that decay over time so you can catch it early and refresh before you lose your position in the recurring retrieval set.

The "long long tail" of Gemini's search behavior means the model generates varied, specific queries — and as those queries evolve, previously-cited content may no longer match. Tracking decay reveals when this happens.

Defaults

  • Model: gemini-3-flash-preview — the same model powering Google AI Overviews
  • Samples: 20 runs per prompt — captures probabilistic citation patterns
  • Data format: Append-only JSON — never overwrites historical data

Requirements

  • Gemini API key (free from aistudio.google.com) — set as GEMINI_API_KEY env var
  • Python 3.9+
  • No pip dependencies (stdlib only)

Usage

Scan — Record current citation rates

# Scan prompts and save to data file
GEMINI_API_KEY="$GEMINI_API_KEY" python3 scripts/track.py scan \
    --domain acme.com \
--prompts "best content optimization tools" "SEO content software" \
    --data-file freshness.json

# With prompts from a file
GEMINI_API_KEY="$GEMINI_API_KEY" python3 scripts/track.py scan \
    --domain acme.com \
    --prompts-file prompts.txt \
    --data-file freshness.json

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
