researching-industry-landscape

researching-industry-landscape is a skill for Claude Code from qte77/claude-code-plugins. It costs 45 tokens per session (635 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A research process for mapping competitors and the wider business landscape. It produces a comparison of competing companies and identifies underserved areas, also called whitespace.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it at the start of a go-to-market project to define the research scope, find direct and indirect competitors, compare their positioning and customers, assess market dynamics, and identify gaps.
Why use it?
It helps a go-to-market team understand who serves a market, how competitors differ, and where customer needs may not be well covered.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00045 $0.00635
Opus 5 $0.00023 $0.00318
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00127
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00064

Security

Grade A, and why

researching-industry-landscape scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Researching Industry Landscape (Phase 1A)

Target: $ARGUMENTS

Phase 1A of the GTM pipeline. Runs in parallel with Phase 0. Produces competitive intelligence that feeds Phase 1B (researching-market).

Mode Awareness

Read config/mode.md before starting:

  • concise — Top 5 competitors, one-line summary per player, key whitespace only
  • detailed — Full competitor profiles, market map, trend analysis
  • conservative — Focus on established market leaders and proven segments
  • ambitious — Identify emerging players, disruption vectors, underserved niches

Inputs

  • config/targets.md — Target markets to scope the competitive search
  • config/comments_research.md — Research constraints (geography, verticals, depth)
  • config/mode.md — Style and approach settings

Workflow

  1. Define search scope from config/targets.md and config/comments_research.md
  2. Identify competitors — Direct, adjacent, and indirect players (target 6-10)
  3. Profile each competitor — Positioning, pricing, target segment, key features
  4. Assess competitive dynamics — Who wins and why? Who is losing ground?
  5. Map whitespace — Where are underserved segments or capability gaps?
  6. Identify trends — Regulatory, technological, or behavioral shifts shaping the landscape
  7. Validate against criteria — Check config/validation_criteria.md Phase 1A gates

Output

Write to results/phase-1a/:

Rules

  • Use public sources only; cite every claim with URL
  • Cover direct competitors before adjacent ones
  • Whitespace must be specific — not "SMB market" but "SMB fintech compliance tooling"
  • Cross-reference competitor weaknesses against Phase 0 capabilities once available

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
