writing-hooks

writing-hooks is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from RaNDoM6913/claude-code-superkit. It costs 29 tokens per session (2,877 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A reference skill for creating Claude Code hooks, which are scripts that run automatically at points such as before or after tools are used.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for writing, configuring, testing, or troubleshooting lifecycle hooks under a Claude Code project.
Why use it?
It explains how to observe or block tool actions safely, handle errors, and connect hooks to configuration files.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00029 $0.02877
Opus 5 $0.00015 $0.01438
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00575
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00288

Security

Grade A, and why

writing-hooks scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Writing Claude Code Hooks

Hooks are shell scripts Claude Code runs at lifecycle events (before/after a tool, on session start, before compaction, on stop). They observe tool calls and can block a dangerous one. This reference covers the file format, exit codes, per-event stdin JSON, the profile system, parsing, settings.json wiring, and testing.

Use when

  • Writing or editing a hook under .claude/scripts/hooks/.
  • Wiring a hook into .claude/settings.json.
  • Debugging why a hook blocks, warns, or gets skipped.

Do not use when

  • Authoring agents or slash commands → use the writing-agents / writing-commands skills.
  • The task is application code, not lifecycle automation.

Hard Rules

  • Default to exit 0. Use exit 2 only when you are certain the action must be blocked — a hook must never crash Claude Code.
  • On any unexpected error, fail open (exit 0); a broken hook must not stop the user's work.
  • Do NOT use set -e — one failing command must not abort the whole hook.
  • Keep every hook under ~1-2 seconds; guard external calls with the timeout command; never block on the network.
  • Always quote paths ("$FILE_PATH"); confirm a file exists before reading it.
  • timeout: in settings.json is in SECONDS, not milliseconds.
  • Hooks observe and warn — they do not modify files.

Hook File Anatomy

Hooks are .sh files in .claude/scripts/hooks/.

#!/bin/bash
# hook-name.sh — [Event] hook
# Description of what this hook does
# Profile: [always|fast|standard|strict]   # see Profile System

# Read hook input from stdin (JSON)
INPUT=$(cat)

# Parse fields with jq (if available) or node
TOOL_NAME=$(echo "$INPUT" | jq -r '.tool_name // empty' 2>/dev/null)
FILE_PATH=$(echo "$INPUT" | jq -r '.tool_input.file_path // empty' 2>/dev/null)

# Your validation logic here

exit 0

Exit Codes

Code Meaning Effect
0 Allow Tool call proceeds (or no output for info-only hooks)
2 BLOCK Tool call is rejected; stderr message shown to Claude
Other Error Hook failure logged, tool call proceeds (fail-open)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

writing-hooks is a skill published in the GitHub repository RaNDoM6913/claude-code-superkit (2 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 29 tokens to every session and 2,877 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
