authentication

authentication is a skill for Claude Code from RedHatProductSecurity/prodsec-skills. It costs 34 tokens per session (347 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Security instructions for connecting AI systems to external databases, APIs, and data services. They require identifying and authenticating each connecting user or service with standard protocols such as OAuth, mTLS, SAML, or Kerberos.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when designing, configuring, or reviewing external data connections to choose an accepted authentication method and check that every source is protected.
Why use it?
They reduce the risk of unauthenticated access, shared credentials, credentials stored in code, and old API keys that are not rotated.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00034 $0.00347
Opus 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00139
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00007 $0.00069
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00035

Security

Grade A, and why

authentication scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Authentication for External Data Sources

Security Requirement

External data sources MUST require that the principal (user or service) connecting to them is identified and authenticated. The authentication MUST use standard protocols.

Standard Authentication Protocols

Protocol Use Case
OAuth 2.1 / OIDC Web APIs, REST services, cloud data sources
SPIFFE/SPIRE + mTLS Service-to-service connections within infrastructure
SAML Federated enterprise data sources
Kerberos On-premise databases and services (Active Directory environments)
Client certificates (mTLS) Machine-to-machine data source access

What Is Not Acceptable

  • Unauthenticated connections to data sources containing any data
  • Shared credentials used by all services
  • Credentials embedded in connection strings in source code
  • Long-lived API keys without rotation (see api_keys/avoid-api-keys)

Implementation Checklist

  • Identify all external data sources accessed by the AI system
  • Require authentication for every data source connection
  • Use standard authentication protocols (OAuth, mTLS, Kerberos)
  • Use unique credentials per service or workload (no shared credentials)
  • Store credentials in a secret management system
  • Rotate credentials on a regular schedule
  • Log authentication events (successes and failures)
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

authentication is a skill published in the GitHub repository RedHatProductSecurity/prodsec-skills (55 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 34 tokens to every session and 347 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
