redis-docs-mcp

redis-docs-mcp is a skill for Claude Code from redis/agent-skills. It costs 132 tokens per session (1,491 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for using the Redis Docs MCP server, a remote service that searches, retrieves, and answers questions about Redis documentation. It explains how to interpret its section-based search results and when to use each operation.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when looking up Redis commands or concepts through the redis.io documentation service, fetching a relevant section, or clarifying a confusing result.
Why use it?
It helps an agent recover when documentation results are empty, incomplete, rate-limited, or structured differently from expected. It also encourages using more specific Redis guidance before relying on raw documentation searches.

About the project

Redis Agent Skills is Redis's collection of packaged instructions and resources that teach AI coding agents how to work with Redis data structures, connections, search, caching, clustering, security, observability, and agent memory. It is for developers using coding agents to build or troubleshoot Redis-backed applications. The catalogue entries are the project's own agent skills, instructions, and plugin packaging.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00132 $0.01491
Opus 5.5 $0.00053 $0.00596
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00026 $0.00298
Haiku 4.5 $0.00013 $0.00149

Security

Grade A, and why

redis-docs-mcp scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Redis Docs MCP

The redis-docs server exposes the redis.io documentation over MCP as search, fetch, and ask. Those tools carry their own descriptions, and on when to call each one they are accurate — start with search, fetch what you need, keep ask for questions that span several areas. This skill covers what they get wrong or leave out.

When to apply

  • You are about to look something up through these tools.
  • A result did not look like what the tool description promised.
  • A search came back empty, or ask was rate-limited or declined to answer.

Reach for the sibling Redis skills first where they cover the topic — they carry curated guidance that raw docs pages do not. Use these tools to verify specifics and fill gaps.

1. Ids address sections, not pages

The tool descriptions say search returns "pages" and fetch returns "one Redis documentation page". The index is per section, and ids come in four shapes:

Shape Example What fetch returns
Bare page commands/expire The whole page — ~8.5 KB for EXPIRE, examples and appendices included
Named anchor develop/using-commands/keyspace#sec:key-expiration That section
Ordinal window develop/ai/search-and-query/advanced-concepts/expiration#sec:w0 That window, ~1–2 KB
Anchor + window develop/clients/jedis/connect#sec:configure-a-connection-pool-w0 That window of that section

What follows from this:

  • Repeated urls in one result set are not duplicates. Several hits often share a page url while carrying distinct ids — they are different sections of the same page. Tell them apart by their snippets, not their urls.
  • #sec:wN ordinals are index windows. They come back in relevance order, not w0, w1, w2. Don't try to reassemble a page out of snippets; fetch the section you actually need.
  • Never construct an id. Valid ids come from a search result or an ask result's sources[].id. Guessing happens to work for commands/<name> and fails on everything with sections.
  • Snippets are truncated prefixes of the body, not summaries. When one cuts off mid-word right at the interesting part, fetch on that id is guaranteed to contain the continuation — no need to re-search with different words.
  • Cite the page url and name the section in prose. #sec:w1 is an index address, not a web anchor. Ids with a named anchor (#sec:<name>, or #sec:<name>-wN) return a url with a usable fragment; bare #sec:wN ids don't.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
