mcp-builder

mcp-builder is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from regen-coordination/org-os-template. It costs 136 tokens per session (2,178 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of mcp-builder, MIT.

A guide for building MCP servers, which let an AI agent use clearly defined tools to interact with APIs and other services.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create or improve MCP servers in Python or TypeScript and connect agents to external services or shared data.
Why use it?
It helps you design integrations that expose useful tasks without forcing the agent to work with a low-level API directly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00136 $0.02178
Opus 5 $0.00068 $0.01089
Sonnet 5 $0.00027 $0.00436
Haiku 4.5 $0.00014 $0.00218

Security

Grade A, and why

mcp-builder scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (scripts/connections.py, scripts/evaluation.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

MCP Server Development Guide

Org-os context: Use this skill when building or evolving MCP servers in an org-os instance. Common use cases:

  • Adding tools that surface instance ground-truth (data/projects.yaml, data/funding-opportunities.yaml, data/members.yaml, EIP-4824 schemas in .well-known/, etc.) to LLM consumers.
  • Building an MCP server to expose org-os state to peer instances per federation.yaml.
  • Wrapping third-party APIs (Notion, Karma, Givebutter, funding portals, etc.) the org already integrates with.

Pair with the skill-creator skill if the new MCP also warrants a wrapping skill for operators.

Overview

Create MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers that enable LLMs to interact with external services through well-designed tools. The quality of an MCP server is measured by how well it enables LLMs to accomplish real-world tasks.

Process

🚀 High-Level Workflow

Creating a high-quality MCP server involves four main phases:

Phase 1: Deep Research and Planning

1.1 Understand Modern MCP Design

API Coverage vs. Workflow Tools: Balance comprehensive API endpoint coverage with specialized workflow tools. Workflow tools can be more convenient for specific tasks, while comprehensive coverage gives agents flexibility to compose operations. Performance varies by client—some clients benefit from code execution that combines basic tools, while others work better with higher-level workflows. When uncertain, prioritize comprehensive API coverage.

Tool Naming and Discoverability: Clear, descriptive tool names help agents find the right tools quickly. Use consistent prefixes (e.g., github_create_issue, github_list_repos) and action-oriented naming.

Context Management: Agents benefit from concise tool descriptions and the ability to filter/paginate results. Design tools that return focused, relevant data. Some clients support code execution which can help agents filter and process data efficiently.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
