Why use it?
It helps turn open-ended exploration into organised story material without losing unfinished ideas.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00025 $0.00875
Opus 5 $0.00013 $0.00438
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00175
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00088

Security

Grade A, and why

thinking-mode scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Thinking Mode

The Iron Law

DEVELOP IDEAS FULLY. Invoke specialized subskills for structured work.

When to Use

  • "thinking mode" / "let's brainstorm" / "explore [topic]"
  • "what if..." questions about story direction
  • Worldbuilding and character development
  • Processing parking lot items
  • Series planning and arc development

The Process

Phase 1: Check Parking Lot

On entry, check parking lot file (default: 00_Inbox/Parking_Lot.md, check PROJECT_CONFIG.md for custom path)

If items exist:

  1. Present: "Parking lot has [X] items from WRITING MODE:"
    • List items with dates
  2. Ask: "Process these first, or explore something else?"

Phase 2: Exploration

No restrictions on topics. Explore freely:

  • Themes, arcs, future developments
  • Character backstory and development
  • "What if" scenarios
  • Connecting disparate ideas

Phase 3: Invoke Subskills for Structured Work

When exploration produces structured output, invoke appropriate subskill:

Output Type Required Sub-Skill
New character world-bible
New location world-bible
New equipment world-bible
New faction world-bible
New timeline event world-bible
New system world-bible
New theme world-bible
Research need research
Link validation validate-links

Scene seeds: Save directly to 10_Projects/Scene_Seeds/ Series planning: Save directly to 10_Projects/Series_Planning/

Phase 4: Process Parking Lot Items

For each parking lot item:

  1. Develop the idea (brainstorm, explore implications)
  2. Decide destination:
    • New canon entry → REQUIRED SUB-SKILL: world-bible
    • Research needed → REQUIRED SUB-SKILL: research
    • Scene seed → Save to 10_Projects/Scene_Seeds/
    • Not worth pursuing → Delete from parking lot
  3. Remove processed item from parking lot file

Phase 5: Validate Links

After creating multiple entries:

REQUIRED SUB-SKILL: Invoke validate-links

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

thinking-mode is a skill published in the GitHub repository reluctantfuturist/loyal-wingman (7 stars, last pushed 8mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 25 tokens to every session and 875 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
