crc-cmd

Two wrapper commands for starting and stopping OpenShift Local, a local OpenShift cluster used for development and testing.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use crcstart and crcstop to manage an OpenShift Local installation on Linux with libvirt.
Why use it?
They address the built-in stop command's short timeout, which can force the virtual machine to stop before its containers have shut down cleanly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00015 $0.02540
Opus 5 $0.00008 $0.01270
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00508
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00254

Security

Grade B, and why

crc-cmd scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Asks for rootmediumPrivilege escalation

A mod that escalates privileges can change anything on the machine, not only the project.

CRC Wrapper Commands

Install two wrapper commands (crcstart and crcstop) into ~/.local/bin/ for managing OpenShift Local (CRC). These replace the built-in crc start and crc stop commands with more reliable alternatives.

Background

Why crcstop exists

The built-in crc stop has a hard-coded 120-second timeout in the libvirt machine driver (crc-org/machine-driver-libvirt, pkg/libvirt/libvirt.go). It sends an ACPI shutdown signal via libvirt.Shutdown(), then polls the VM state in a loop of 120 iterations × 1-second sleep. If the VM hasn't stopped by then, CRC force-kills it with virsh destroy.

The problem is the CRC guest OS (RHCOS) routinely takes 2.5–6 minutes to shut down because:

  • ~160–186 libcrun containers must stop individually (~2.5 min)
  • CRI-O cleanup can take up to its DefaultTimeoutStopSec of 200 seconds
  • The qemu-guest-agent in the VM has ConditionVirtualization=apple, so it's disabled on KVM/libvirt — no guest-agent shutdown path is available

This means crc stop always force-kills the VM on Linux with libvirt.

Why crcstart exists

Created for consistency alongside crcstop. It wraps crc start with pre-flight checks (is the VM already running?) and post-start status display.

Prerequisites

  • ~/.local/bin must be on PATH (Fedora default via ~/.bashrc)
  • CRC installed and configured with libvirt driver
  • SSH key exists at ~/.crc/machines/crc/id_ed25519 (created by CRC automatically)
  • virsh available (from libvirt-client package)
  • crc-daemon.service running as a systemd user unit

Steps

  1. Create ~/.local/bin if it doesn't exist

    mkdir -p ~/.local/bin

  2. Create ~/.local/bin/crcstop with the script content from the crcstop script section below.

  3. Create ~/.local/bin/crcstart with the script content from the crcstart script section below.

  4. Make both executable

    chmod +x ~/.local/bin/crcstop ~/.local/bin/crcstart

Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

crc-cmd is a skill published in the GitHub repository rhtevan/agentfs (2 stars, last pushed 4d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 15 tokens to every session and 2,540 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (asks for root). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
