authoring-plugins

authoring-plugins is a skill for Claude Code from richfrem/agent-plugins-skills. It costs 115 tokens per session (838 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A plugin scaffolding and checking tool for agent add-ons. It creates a plugin folder with its manifest, documentation, and skills, or audits an existing plugin.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to start a plugin, check its files and components, or recheck the plugin after changes.
Why use it?
It helps catch invalid structure, portability problems, and manifest mistakes before a plugin is used or shared.

Skill for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: allowed-tools in frontmatter. Also seen: mentions .claude-plugin; mentions subagents; mentions AGENTS.md.

Runs only inside its plugin — its command needs a path that Claude Code sets for a plugin’s own hooks and for nothing else. Install the plugin, not this.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00115 $0.00838
Opus 5.5 $0.00046 $0.00335
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00023 $0.00168
Haiku 4.5 $0.00012 $0.00084

Security

Grade A, and why

authoring-plugins scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 16 executable files (scripts/assert_audit.py, scripts/audit_plugin_l5_execute.py, scripts/audit_plugin_paths.py, …), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Authoring Plugins (authoring-plugins)

Creates a plugin skeleton and audits a plugin as a whole; component audits are delegated to the sibling skills by name.

Contents

Constraints

  1. Self-contained skills: scripts, references and assets live inside the skill that uses them; no plugin-root shared files, no symlinks.
  2. Clean manifest: .claude-plugin/plugin.json has an author object and never lists skills, agents or hooks (they are auto-discovered).
  3. apm.yml is optional: APM installs a plugin as it is; packaging belongs to packaging-with-apm.
  4. Portable: no /Users/ or /home/ paths; use relative paths or ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}.
  5. No cross-plugin imports; refer to other plugins' skills by name.
  6. Audits are read-only.

Modes

Mode Use when Entry point Reference
create New plugin scripts/scaffold_plugin.py create-plugin.md
audit Validate a plugin scripts/audit_plugin_structure.py, scripts/audit.py audit-plugin.md

Quick start

python3 scripts/scaffold_plugin.py --name <plugin-name> --path plugins [--with-hooks] [--with-mcp]
python3 scripts/audit_plugin_structure.py plugins/<plugin-name>
python3 scripts/audit.py --path plugins/<plugin-name>

audit.py runs the per-skill audit through the sibling authoring-skills skill and warns when it is not installed.

Workflow

  1. Pick the mode and read its reference.
  2. Create: scaffold, then add components with authoring-skills, authoring-subagents and authoring-instructions.
  3. Audit: run both scripts, then delegate skills, sub-agents, rules and hooks to those skills by name.
  4. On failure follow fallback-tree.md.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
