checking-links

checking-links is a skill for Claude Code from richfrem/agent-plugins-skills. It costs 23 tokens per session (586 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A documentation quality-check workflow that finds broken Markdown links and image references in a repository. It can repair links only when the correct target is unambiguous.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inventory repository files, extract references, audit broken links, preview repairs, fix unique Markdown or image targets, and report ambiguous cases for manual review.
Why use it?
It helps prevent readers from reaching missing pages or images while avoiding guesses when several files could match a link.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00023 $0.00586
Opus 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00234
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00005 $0.00117
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00059

Security

Grade A, and why

checking-links scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 5 executable files (scripts/01_build_file_inventory.py, scripts/02_extract_link_references.py, scripts/03_audit_broken_links.py, …), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 58 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Audits and repairs broken documentation and image references across repositories using a strict 5-step pipeline.

Contents

Critical Constraints

  1. Pipeline Order: Run steps strictly in sequence: 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> 5. Never skip inventory or audit.
  2. Clean Git State: Verify git working tree is clean before running Step 4 (--dry-run first).
  3. Scope Restriction: Step 4 only auto-corrects unambiguous markdown/image links; code paths in .py/.js are never modified.
  4. No Guessing: Ambiguous link targets matching multiple files are left for manual user review in Step 5.

Quick start

Execute the complete 5-step audit and autofix pipeline:

python3 scripts/01_build_file_inventory.py && \
python3 scripts/02_extract_link_references.py && \
python3 scripts/03_audit_broken_links.py && \
python3 scripts/04_autofix_unique_links.py --dry-run

Workflow

  1. Step 1 (Inventory): Run scripts/01_build_file_inventory.py to index all valid filenames in repository.
  2. Step 2 (Extraction): Run scripts/02_extract_link_references.py to extract all link/path strings with line numbers.
  3. Step 3 (Audit): Run scripts/03_audit_broken_links.py to audit references against the file inventory.
  4. Step 4 (Auto-Fix): Run scripts/04_autofix_unique_links.py --dry-run to preview fixes, followed by --backup to apply.
  5. Step 5 (Report): Run scripts/05_report_unfixable_links.py to produce unfixable_links_report.md.

Verification

Confirm zero remaining broken links or review unfixable report:

test -f broken_links.json && python3 -c "import json; d=json.load(open('broken_links.json')); print(f'Broken links: {len(d)}')"

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

checking-links is a skill published in the GitHub repository richfrem/agent-plugins-skills (7 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 23 tokens to every session and 586 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-24.
