improving-skills-in-lab

improving-skills-in-lab is a skill for Claude Code from richfrem/agent-plugins-skills. It costs 235 tokens per session (1,911 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guided laboratory workflow for improving an AI-agent skill through isolated experiments and locked scoring. It compares changes, keeps accepted improvements, discards rejected ones, and backports approved results.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to improve a skill, investigate why it does not trigger, score a proposed change, and move a kept improvement back to the main source.
Why use it?
It separates experiments from the main skill, prevents the scoring rules from being changed during evaluation, and avoids recording approval on someone else's behalf.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00235 $0.01911
Opus 5.5 $0.00094 $0.00764
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00047 $0.00382
Haiku 4.5 $0.00023 $0.00191

Security

Grade A, and why

improving-skills-in-lab scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Improving skills in the lab

One conversation takes a skill or agent from a plain-language goal to a scored, backported improvement. Each mode below was a separate skill; its full workflow is a reference loaded when that mode starts.

Contents

Critical constraints

  1. One question at a time. Read the whole message first, never re-ask, and offer a default with each choice.
  2. Stay read-only until the user confirms the summary (the interview, step 4).
  3. The scorer is locked. Every change gets exit 0 (KEEP) or 1 (DISCARD, auto-reverted); never edit evals/evals.json or the scorer during a run.
  4. Never record an approval for the user. Present the command and let them run it.
  5. Lab work stays in the isolated lab repo. Master sources change only through the backport mode, and only after checking the target skill is installed.

Quick start

Keep the user's own wording. Ask in this order, skipping what is known, then confirm before writing anything:

  1. What to improve and why, and whether it exists or is new.
  2. Read the target's source and look for overlap (skills, agents, earlier runs, the target skill's program.md, evals/results.tsv); report what was found.
  3. Success definition, depth (about 10, 50 or 100+ runs; recommend 50), available tools (which gh agy claude), second-opinion check, known problems.
  4. Restate and ask "Does this look right?". Then write the target skill's program.md, improvement/run-config.json and improvement/session-brief.md, asking before overwriting. Resume from improvement/run-config.json when it exists.

Full conversation script: interview.md.

Workflow

Mode Use when Run Workflow
plan Planning an improvement, writing a delegation prompt, auditing what already exists, deciding update vs create, a new pattern to generalize agent work, no script planner
setup An isolated lab repo must be built and baselined scripts/generate_eval_instructions.py, scripts/init_autoresearch.py setup
loop Running the improvement cycle (orient, mutate once, score, close); solo or ORCHESTRATOR with INNER_AGENT and PEER_AGENT; fan-out, event bus, claim_task, triple-loop; closing the cycle solo, or ORCHESTRATOR with INNER_AGENT and PEER_AGENT loop
score Evaluating a skill; one change needs KEEP or DISCARD; skill routing or description is wrong; RED-GREEN-REFACTOR; measuring a gain; running tests on a skill scripts/evaluate.py, scripts/eval_runner.py scorer

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

improving-skills-in-lab is a skill published in the GitHub repository richfrem/agent-plugins-skills (7 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 235 tokens to every session and 1,911 once invoked, about $0.0009 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-25.
