sync-docs

sync-docs is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from richkuo/rk-skills. It costs 85 tokens per session (1,727 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A skill for updating existing project instructions and documentation, such as CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, SKILL.md, and README.md, after code changes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it after commits or pull requests to update the documentation files that already exist in the repository.
Why use it?
It keeps documentation aligned with the current code and removes outdated instructions instead of leaving agents to rely on incorrect information.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00085 $0.01727
Opus 5 $0.00043 $0.00864
Sonnet 5 $0.00017 $0.00345
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00173

Security

Grade A, and why

sync-docs scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 90 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

sync-docs

Keep CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, SKILL.md, and README.md accurate after new commits land: find the last docs-sync point, classify every commit since then, and write targeted edits. Syncing is bidirectional: add what is new, and remove or correct anything the current codebase contradicts (stale paths, renamed symbols, removed fields, dead defaults). A doc that lies is worse than one that is incomplete.

Adapt to the repo. Edit the docs that exist; never create a new top-level doc (AGENTS.md, CHANGELOG.md, SKILL.md) during a sync. If one seems warranted, surface it to the user.

Audiences: CLAUDE.md is the dense agent reference (architecture, symbol and file names, file:line cues) and describes current behavior, never history. AGENTS.md is the counterpart for other agent tools (step 5). SKILL.md is operator-facing and imperative (config keys, setup, CLI flows); symbol and field names stay out of its tables. README.md is the newcomer entry point and changes only when the public surface changes. CHANGELOG.md, when present, holds per-issue rationale and migration history so CLAUDE.md stays lean.

Preconditions

git log --oneline -5 to confirm the branch; git status must be clean.

Steps

1. Find the last sync baseline

git log --oneline | grep -m1 "docs:.*sync\|docs:.*CLAUDE\|docs:.*SKILL\|sync docs"

If none is found, ask the user for the last-known-good tag or SHA, or use the initial commit for a first sync.

2. Get commits since the baseline

git log <last-sync-sha>..HEAD --oneline. Exclude pure CI, workflow, and chore commits unless they change agent- or operator-facing behavior.

3. Classify each commit

Category Docs target Action
New config field / flag CLAUDE.md config; SKILL.md settings table; README.md only for a public top-level knob Add field description
Changed default behavior CLAUDE.md patterns; SKILL.md; README.md only if a documented example now contradicts the code Update; note old vs new
New pluggable unit (plugin, command, integration, provider, theme) Every doc that enumerates the set Add one entry per doc
Bug fix (behavior change) CLAUDE.md patterns, if pattern-level Update the bullet
New CLI command / flag SKILL.md commands; README.md Getting Started only if part of setup Add usage
Setup / install flow change README.md Getting Started; SKILL.md if operator-facing Update the block
Internal refactor / test Skip
Release milestone Project notes file, if one exists (step 9) Append version entry
Rationale or migration history (CHANGELOG.md exists) CHANGELOG.md Keyed entry there; CLAUDE.md keeps only the current invariant
Doc claim contradicted by code Whichever doc carries the claim Correct or delete it

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

sync-docs is a skill published in the GitHub repository richkuo/rk-skills (49 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 85 tokens to every session and 1,727 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
