In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to install or update the crawler for shared plugin use, one project, or a specified directory, after confirming the download and disk requirements.
Why use it?
It keeps the website-crawling tools isolated from other projects and makes setup or updates easier to manage.

Skill for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: allowed-tools in frontmatter.

Runs only inside its plugin — its command needs a path that Claude Code sets for a plugin’s own hooks and for nothing else. Install the plugin, not this.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00025 $0.00433
Opus 5 $0.00013 $0.00217
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00087
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00043

Security

Grade A, and why

crawl4ai-install scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Install Crawl4AI runtime

Before asking for confirmation, clearly tell the user:

  • installation normally takes about 5–15 minutes, depending on internet speed, the Python package cache, and the computer;
  • downloads may exceed 500 MB because Crawl4AI dependencies and Chromium binaries are included;
  • approximately 2 GB of free disk space is recommended;
  • Python 3.10+, venv, network access, and supported OS libraries are required;
  • the terminal may appear busy for several minutes during large package or browser downloads.

Ask for confirmation before downloading anything. Then select one command:

# Persistent plugin data, shared across projects (recommended)
"${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/crawl4ai" install --scope custom --directory "${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_DATA}" --project-root "${CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR}"

# Current project only
"${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/crawl4ai" install --scope project --project-root "${CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR}"

# Explicit directory
"${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/crawl4ai" install --scope custom --directory "/absolute/path" --project-root "${CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR}"

Run the selected command directly so its [step/total] progress messages remain visible; do not hide all output behind tail or claim that a quiet step is stalled. The installer prints elapsed time and announces each environment, dependency, verification, and browser stage.

The installer creates separate .venv and .trafilatura-venv environments to avoid dependency conflicts. It runs crawl4ai-setup when available. Do not claim browser readiness unless the command confirms it. Exit code 2 means Python packages installed but browser setup was not verified. --skip-browser intentionally skips browser installation and must be reported as such.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
