rename-skill

rename-skill is a skill for Claude Code from RongchangLi/pocketskill. It costs 25 tokens per session (639 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A workflow for safely renaming an existing Pocket Skill directory and its identifying information. It also updates obvious references and refreshes the local plugin registration.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to rename a skill in a Pocket Skill repository after checking the old and new names and making sure the destination does not already exist.
Why use it?
It reduces the chance of broken paths, invalid names, or stale local registration when a skill is renamed.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00025 $0.00639
Opus 5 $0.00013 $0.00319
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00128
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00064

Security

Grade A, and why

rename-skill scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Instructions

When the user invokes this skill, rename an existing Pocket Skill.

Tool Expectations

This workflow may use shell commands and git commands such as git mv.

All operations must happen from the pocketskill repository root. First locate it:

  • Use the current working directory if it contains plugins/my-skill/skills/ and install.sh.
  • Otherwise search upward from the current working directory.
  • If no root is found, ask the user for the pocketskill path and stop until they provide it.

Workflow

1. Collect Names

Ask for the old skill name and new skill name if missing.

Validate both base names:

  • Must match ^[a-z0-9]+(-[a-z0-9]+)*$
  • Must not contain /, \, ., .., spaces, shell metacharacters, or quotes

Resolve the old path by searching my-skills/ and private-skills/:

plugins/my-skill/skills/my-skills/<old-name>/SKILL.md
plugins/my-skill/skills/private-skills/<old-name>/SKILL.md
  • If the old skill is in manage-skills/, refuse with "Built-in management skills cannot be renamed."
  • Stop if the old skill does not exist or the new target already exists in either my-skills/ or private-skills/.

The new skill stays in the same parent directory as the old one unless the user explicitly asks to move between my-skills/ and private-skills/.

2. Rename Safely

  • The new path is <repo-root>/plugins/my-skill/skills/<parent-dir>/<new-name>/SKILL.md.
  • If inside a git repository and the old skill is tracked, use git mv.
  • Otherwise use a normal directory move.
  • Update the moved SKILL.md frontmatter name to the new skill name.
  • Update the first Markdown heading if it is clearly derived from the old name.
  • Keep description unchanged unless the user asked to revise it.

3. Update Obvious References

Search for the old name in the repository:

rg "<old-name>"

Update obvious references in docs or install output, such as README call examples and built-in skill tables. Ask before changing unrelated content.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

rename-skill is a skill published in the GitHub repository RongchangLi/pocketskill (2 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 25 tokens to every session and 639 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
