caudal: Skill for Codex

.agents/skills/research/SKILL.md

research is a skill for Codex from RookieCol/caudal. It costs 49 tokens per session (169 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of research, MIT.

A research workflow that investigates a question using primary sources, such as official documentation, source code, technical specifications, and first-party APIs. It saves the findings and their citations in a Markdown file in the repository.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to gather facts about documentation, APIs, specifications, or code. It is also suited to delegating background research while other work continues.
Why use it?
It removes the reading and source-checking work needed to answer technical questions reliably. Keeping the result in the repository makes the research available to the team and future agents.

Skill for Codex

Written for Codex: agents/openai.yaml present. Also seen: installed under .agents/ (shared by several agents).

This is RookieCol/caudal's own configuration. It tells Codex how to work on caudal itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything caudal configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00049 $0.00169
Opus 5 $0.00024 $0.00084
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00034
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00017

Security

Grade A, and why

research scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Spin up a background agent to do the research, so you keep working while it reads.

Its job:

  1. Investigate the question against primary sources — official docs, source code, specs, first-party APIs — not a secondary write-up of them. Follow every claim back to the source that owns it.
  2. Write the findings to a single Markdown file, citing each claim's source.
  3. Save it where the repo already keeps such notes; match the existing convention, and if there is none, put it somewhere sensible and say where.

What ships with it

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
