mcp-audit

mcp-audit is a skill for Claude Code from roots-rs/mcp-auditor. It costs 26 tokens per session (494 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command that audits connected MCP servers, project files, libraries, and dependencies before implementation. MCP is a standard way for an agent to access external tools.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for running a pre-code reuse review and producing a report of relevant tools and project components.
Why use it?
It shows what can be reused before new code is written, reducing duplicated work and missed integrations.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00026 $0.00494
Opus 5 $0.00013 $0.00247
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00099
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00049

Security

Grade A, and why

mcp-audit scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

MCP Auditor (/mcp-audit)

Perform a thorough pre-implementation audit of connected Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, available tools, local utility modules, and project dependencies before writing any code.

Usage

/mcp-audit <task_description>

Workflow Instructions

When invoked with a task description, follow these execution steps:

Step 1: Inspect Context & MCPs

  1. Audit Connected MCP Tools: Query and list all connected MCP servers, available MCP tools, and external integrations available in the environment.
  2. Audit Workspace Components: Inspect local workspace files, utility functions, libraries, schemas, and dependencies relevant to <task_description>.
  3. Analyze Reuse Opportunities: Identify overlaps between task requirements and existing components or tools.

Step 2: Generate Report

Output a structured Component & MCP Reuse Report following this format:

# Component & MCP Reuse Report

## Task Overview
[Summary of the task description]

## Reusable Components & MCP Tools
- **MCP Tools**: [List connected MCP tools relevant to this task]
- **Project Modules / APIs**: [List existing local files, modules, or functions]

## Gaps Requiring Custom Implementation
- [List features or components that must be built from scratch]

## Proposed Step-by-Step Strategy
1. [Step 1 leveraging existing tools/modules]
2. [Step 2...]

Step 3: Enforce Hard Stop & Decision Protocol

[!CRITICAL] STRICT ENFORCEMENT RULES:

  1. DO NOT modify any existing source code or configuration files during this phase.
  2. DO NOT create new code or resource files.
  3. DO NOT execute state-modifying shell or build commands.
  4. MUST NOT ask vague open-ended questions without structure.
  5. MUST use judgment to present next steps as a clean, structured choice tailored to the context complexity (1, 2, 3, or more choices).
  6. MUST always end choices with an Other (specify) option.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

mcp-audit is a skill published in the GitHub repository roots-rs/mcp-auditor (0 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 26 tokens to every session and 494 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
