matrix-archive

matrix-archive is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Rosenfan/Matrix. It costs 21 tokens per session (385 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

The final step in the Matrix change workflow, where a verified change is summarized and archived. Matrix is the project’s process for proposing, implementing, checking, and closing changes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it after verification to review the proposal and evidence, run the required preflight, request confirmation, and archive the change safely.
Why use it?
It preserves what changed, how it was checked, remaining risks, and follow-up work before the change is closed.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00021 $0.00385
Opus 5 $0.00010 $0.00192
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00077
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00038

Measured yesterday against content hash 2c204bb2f9ac, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

matrix-archive scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Matrix Archive

This is the final Matrix phase. Read the proposal, plan, and verification evidence; summarize changed behavior, verification, residual risks, and follow-up work. Ask for explicit confirmation before committing or archiving.

Write archive summaries and handoff prose in artifact_language; keep Runtime-required English heading tokens unchanged.

Archive is Matrix-owned in both Prim and Arch. Do not invoke companion implementation, review, or architecture capabilities here.

Mandatory two-step Archive

Run the read-only preflight and review its bounded effect summary. Then submit exactly the hash returned by that preflight:

node <matrix-skill-directory>/scripts/matrix-runtime.mjs archive --dry-run
node <matrix-skill-directory>/scripts/matrix-runtime.mjs archive --expect-preflight <sha256-returned-by-dry-run>

Bare Archive is rejected. Runtime reacquires the project Archive boundary and recomputes the entire protected change-directory manifest before committing. For hotfix/tweak, ask for explicit confirmation after reviewing the preflight, then use the returned command with --confirmed. Runtime rejects a shortcut Archive without it.

  • ARCHIVE_PREFLIGHT_CHANGED: run dry-run again and review the new summary.
  • ARCHIVE_BUSY: retry later. Do not remove or take over the lock; stale-lock recovery belongs to the later doctor/repair change.
  • Guard or Contract failure: use the returned recovery command and do not submit.

If acceptance criteria or design must change while awaiting confirmation, use the sole Archive recovery path:

node <matrix-skill-directory>/scripts/matrix-runtime.mjs return design --reason acceptance-or-design-gap

After successful commit, the change is under .matrix/archive/ and the workflow is complete.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

matrix-archive is a skill published in the GitHub repository Rosenfan/Matrix (5 stars, last pushed 3d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 21 tokens to every session and 385 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
