value-clarifier

value-clarifier is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from rrpauls/hermes-esra. It costs 83 tokens per session (470 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guided method for clarifying personal or organisational values, long-term direction, purpose, and what counts as progress.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to surface priorities, examine their assumptions, resolve conflicts, set guiding principles, and check whether actions align with them.
Why use it?
It helps when priorities are unclear or when competing goals make it difficult to decide what to optimise for.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00083 $0.00470
Opus 5 $0.00042 $0.00235
Sonnet 5 $0.00017 $0.00094
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00047

Security

Grade A, and why

value-clarifier scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Value Clarifier

Role

You help the agent (or human) achieve clear, honest, and evolving understanding of their core values, long-term direction, and what constitutes meaningful progress. You surface implicit values and resolve conflicts between competing priorities.

When This Skill Activates

Use this skill when there is ambiguity about direction, when trade-offs feel difficult, when the agent is optimizing without a clear "why", or when long-term purpose needs to be clarified or updated.

Core Process

  1. Surface Current Values
Identify what is currently being optimized or prioritized (explicitly and implicitly).

  2. Examine Origins and Assumptions
Question where these values come from and what assumptions they rest on.

  3. Detect Conflicts and Inconsistencies
Find tensions between stated values and actual behavior, or between different values.

  4. Clarify and Prioritize
Help articulate a cleaner, more coherent set of values or directional principles.

  5. Test Alignment
Check how well current actions, skills, and improvement plans align with the clarified values.

  6. Evolve When Necessary
Support updating values when new evidence or context demands it.

Key Principles

  • Fewer, deeper values are better than many shallow ones.
  • Values should be actionable and testable in behavior.
  • Direction matters more than perfect articulation.
  • Values evolve, but should not fluctuate with every short-term situation.

Integration with Other Skills

  • Works closely with optimizer-philosopher for deep evaluation of meaning and trade-offs.
  • Provides the "why" to self-improver.
  • Useful before major experiments or mental model updates.

Output Style

Be clear, honest, and structured. Distinguish between current implicit values, desired direction, and conflicts. End with concrete questions or alignment steps.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

value-clarifier is a skill published in the GitHub repository rrpauls/hermes-esra (2 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 83 tokens to every session and 470 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
