async-python-patterns

async-python-patterns is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from RudyCity/superagent. It costs 42 tokens per session (1,736 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of async-python-patterns, MIT.

A guide to Python's asyncio system and async/await code, which lets programs handle waiting tasks such as network, database, or file operations without blocking each other.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when building async web APIs, concurrent network or database operations, web scrapers, WebSocket applications, microservices, queues, or other I/O-heavy programs.
Why use it?
It helps choose between asynchronous and regular Python code and avoid using concurrency where it does not fit the workload.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00042 $0.01736
Opus 5.5 $0.00017 $0.00694
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00347
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00174

Security

Grade A, and why

async-python-patterns scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Async Python Patterns

Comprehensive guidance for implementing asynchronous Python applications using asyncio, concurrent programming patterns, and async/await for building high-performance, non-blocking systems.

When to Use This Skill

  • Building async web APIs (FastAPI, aiohttp, Sanic)
  • Implementing concurrent I/O operations (database, file, network)
  • Creating web scrapers with concurrent requests
  • Developing real-time applications (WebSocket servers, chat systems)
  • Processing multiple independent tasks simultaneously
  • Building microservices with async communication
  • Optimizing I/O-bound workloads
  • Implementing async background tasks and queues

Sync vs Async Decision Guide

Before adopting async, consider whether it's the right choice for your use case.

Use Case Recommended Approach
Many concurrent network/DB calls asyncio
CPU-bound computation multiprocessing or thread pool
Mixed I/O + CPU Offload CPU work with asyncio.to_thread()
Simple scripts, few connections Sync (simpler, easier to debug)
Web APIs with high concurrency Async frameworks (FastAPI, aiohttp)

Key Rule: Stay fully sync or fully async within a call path. Mixing creates hidden blocking and complexity.

Core Concepts

1. Event Loop

The event loop is the heart of asyncio, managing and scheduling asynchronous tasks.

Key characteristics:

  • Single-threaded cooperative multitasking
  • Schedules coroutines for execution
  • Handles I/O operations without blocking
  • Manages callbacks and futures

2. Coroutines

Functions defined with async def that can be paused and resumed.

Syntax:

async def my_coroutine():
    result = await some_async_operation()
    return result

3. Tasks

Scheduled coroutines that run concurrently on the event loop.

4. Futures

Low-level objects representing eventual results of async operations.

5. Async Context Managers

Resources that support async with for proper cleanup.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

async-python-patterns is a skill published in the GitHub repository RudyCity/superagent (51 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 42 tokens to every session and 1,736 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. It is 78% identical to async-python-patterns, differing in 466 lines, and is treated as a copy.
