vision-bridge-windows-automation

vision-bridge-windows-automation is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from rusnetru/vision-bridge. It costs 85 tokens per session (1,365 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A Windows automation tool for reading and controlling desktop applications, Electron apps, and browser windows. It reads the screen as structured text and targets interface elements by stable identifiers instead of screen coordinates.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect screens, find controls, click, type, and wait in Windows GUI programs, Electron applications, or browser tasks.
Why use it?
It lets an agent operate programs that lack a usable API or command line, including older Windows software and a user's logged-in Chrome session.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00085 $0.01365
Opus 5.5 $0.00034 $0.00546
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00017 $0.00273
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00136

Security

Grade A, and why

vision-bridge-windows-automation scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

vision-bridge: Windows desktop automation

vision-bridge is one MCP server that gives the agent four verbs for any window on Windows: capture (see), act (do), find (locate), wait_for (wait). The screen comes back as structured text, so this works for text-only models too. Elements are addressed by a stable id - never by pixel coordinates or CSS selectors.

Repository: https://github.com/rusnetru/vision-bridge (MIT)

When to use

Use it when:

  • the task lives in a Windows GUI program with no API or CLI (ERP/accounting clients, installers, settings dialogs, legacy WinForms/WPF apps, Notepad, Explorer);
  • an Electron/Chromium desktop app must be read or clicked (OCR fallback handles it);
  • a web task needs the user's own logged-in Chrome session.

Do NOT use it when:

  • a CLI, API, file read or a dedicated MCP server can do the job - those are faster and exact;
  • the machine is not Windows (UIA and OCR backends are Windows-only);
  • the action is irreversible (payments, deletes, sending messages) and the user has not confirmed it in this conversation.

Setup check (first call)

  1. Call capture("") (foreground window). If the tool is missing, vision-bridge is not connected - show the user reference/setup.md and stop.
  2. If the result has ok: false and an error like backend 'uia' unavailable ... uv sync --extra desktop, relay that exact install command to the user. Do not try to install packages yourself unless asked.

Core loop

capture(target)            -> read `text`, pick the element from `elements[]`
act(id, action, ...)       -> click / type / set_value / focus / read / scroll / double_click
capture(target) again -> verify the result before the next step

Rules:

  • Re-capture after every state-changing action. Ids are valid for the latest capture/find; after a click the window may change and old ids go stale.
  • Verify, don't assume. After type or set_value, call act(id, "read") and compare content with what you meant to enter.
  • Prefer set_value over type for fields you want to replace entirely; use type for appending or for controls that react to keystrokes (search boxes, autocomplete).
  • Use find for one known element, capture when you need to understand the screen.
  • Use wait_for instead of sleeping after anything that loads: dialogs, installers, page navigation. Set timeout_s to the realistic wait (30-120 s for installers).

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
