grocy

grocy is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from rusty4444/grocy-mcp. It costs 29 tokens per session (477 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for using Grocy through an MCP server. Grocy is a household management app for tracking products, stock, recipes, chores, batteries, tasks and shopping lists.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to read and update household stock, search products or barcodes, manage shopping lists, and work with Grocy records.
Why use it?
It tells an agent which Grocy operations to use for finding products, checking stock and changing shopping lists or inventory.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00029 $0.00477
Opus 5 $0.00015 $0.00238
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00095
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00048

Measured 5d ago against content hash 74af4fdaf25f, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-05, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

grocy scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Grocy MCP Skill

Use this skill when the user asks Hermes to connect to or automate Grocy.

Setup

Configure the MCP server with:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "grocy": {
      "command": "grocy-mcp",
      "env": {
        "GROCY_BASE_URL": "https://grocy.example.com",
        "GROCY_API_KEY": "your-api-key"
      }
    }
  }
}

GROCY_BASE_URL may include or omit /api. GROCY_API_KEY is required for private instances and write operations.

Tool selection

  • Product discovery: grocy_list_products, grocy_search_products, grocy_get_product
  • Stock status: grocy_stock_overview, grocy_volatile_stock, grocy_product_stock_details, grocy_product_stock_entries
  • Barcode lookup: grocy_lookup_product_by_barcode
  • Shopping list reads: grocy_list_shopping_lists, grocy_list_shopping_list_items
  • Shopping list changes: grocy_add_product_to_shopping_list, grocy_remove_product_from_shopping_list
  • Stock mutations: grocy_add_stock, grocy_consume_stock, grocy_inventory_product
  • Advanced Grocy records: grocy_common_entities, grocy_list_entity, grocy_get_entity_object, grocy_create_entity_object, grocy_update_entity_object

Pitfalls

  • Write tools mutate live household data. Confirm product id, amount, and list id before destructive stock changes.
  • Grocy generic entity names are plural table names such as products, quantity_units, locations, shopping_list, shopping_lists, chores, batteries, and equipment.
  • For generic create/update, pass a JSON object string, not YAML or free-form prose.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

grocy is a skill published in the GitHub repository rusty4444/grocy-mcp (3 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 29 tokens to every session and 477 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
