cdc-debezium-rails

cdc-debezium-rails is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from sandeepmvl/rails-skills. It costs 120 tokens per session (2,291 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

Guidance for Change Data Capture from a Rails Postgres database using Debezium and Kafka. Change Data Capture automatically publishes database row changes for other systems to consume.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to configure Postgres logical replication, Debezium connectors, Kafka topics, snapshots, schema changes, and delete handling when downstream systems need database state.
Why use it?
It lets search indexes, warehouses, caches, audit systems, and other services receive database changes without adding event-publishing code to every Rails write.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00120 $0.02291
Opus 5 $0.00060 $0.01145
Sonnet 5 $0.00024 $0.00458
Haiku 4.5 $0.00012 $0.00229

Security

Grade A, and why

cdc-debezium-rails scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

CDC with Debezium

CDC publishes every row change in your Rails DB as a Kafka event. Downstream consumers (search index, data warehouse, audit log, downstream services) get them without your app emitting anything. Powerful and dangerous — every Rails write becomes a public contract.

The opinion

Use Debezium with Postgres logical replication when you have multiple downstream consumers needing eventually-consistent DB state (search, warehouse, cache invalidation). Do NOT use CDC as your domain event bus — emit explicit domain events from the app layer for that. CDC leaks schema; domain events express intent. Set REPLICA IDENTITY FULL on tables you publish from. Use a single publication and replication slot per Debezium connector. Tombstone-handle deletes.

When CDC fits

Use case CDC fits?
Update search index when posts change
Stream changes to a data warehouse
Audit trail of every DB write
Cache invalidation on row updates
Sync to a downstream service's own DB ⚠️ (couples on schema — use domain events)
Trigger business workflows ❌ (semantic = "row changed", not "order placed")
Eventual consistency between microservices ❌ (use domain events)

The litmus test: would a column rename break downstream? If yes, you're using CDC for the wrong thing.

Postgres setup

-- postgresql.conf
wal_level = logical
max_replication_slots = 4      -- one per Debezium connector
max_wal_senders = 4

-- Restart Postgres.
-- Create a publication for the tables you want to stream
CREATE PUBLICATION rails_app_pub FOR TABLE posts, users, orders;

-- Or all tables (broad)
-- CREATE PUBLICATION rails_app_pub FOR ALL TABLES;

-- Critical: enables UPDATE/DELETE events to include the previous row state
ALTER TABLE posts REPLICA IDENTITY FULL;
ALTER TABLE users REPLICA IDENTITY FULL;
ALTER TABLE orders REPLICA IDENTITY FULL;

-- Replication user with limited grants
CREATE ROLE debezium WITH REPLICATION LOGIN PASSWORD 'redacted';
GRANT CONNECT ON DATABASE rails_app TO debezium;
GRANT USAGE ON SCHEMA public TO debezium;
GRANT SELECT ON ALL TABLES IN SCHEMA public TO debezium;
ALTER DEFAULT PRIVILEGES IN SCHEMA public GRANT SELECT ON TABLES TO debezium;

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
