docs-research

docs-research is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from scalvert/docusaurus-plugin-mcp-server. It costs 33 tokens per session (474 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A documentation research tool for answering questions about a specific product from its official documentation. It searches the documentation, retrieves relevant pages, and bases answers on those pages with links.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to learn how a product works, install or configure it, use its options, or investigate an error using official sources.
Why use it?
It reduces the chance of relying on outdated, incomplete, or invented instructions. It also provides a way to say when the official documentation does not cover the question.

Getting it into your agent

One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00033 $0.00474
Opus 5.5 $0.00013 $0.00190
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00007 $0.00095
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00047

Security

Grade A, and why

docs-research scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 28d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Researching {{siteDocs}}

This MCP server exposes {{siteDocs}} through two tools:

  • docs_search: full-text search across every page. Returns titles, URLs, matching sections, and snippets.
  • docs_fetch: returns the complete markdown of one page, given its URL, or one section of it when the URL ends in #heading-id.

Workflow

  1. Search first. Call docs_search with a few specific keywords (product terms, API or option names, error strings) rather than a full sentence.
  2. Pick candidates. Use titles, matching sections, and snippets to choose the one to three most relevant URLs. Snippets are excerpts, not answers.
  3. Fetch before answering. Call docs_fetch with an exact URL from the results. The page starts with a contents list; focus on the sections that matter.
  4. Refine when results are thin. Search again with synonyms, narrower terms, or terms you saw in fetched pages. Try two or three searches before concluding the docs don't cover something.
  5. Answer from the docs. Ground the answer in fetched content and link the pages you used (add #heading-id anchors where useful). If the docs don't cover the question, say so instead of guessing.

{{siteMap}}

Tips

  • docs_search returns up to 16 results by default (max 20). Pass a smaller limit for focused lookups.
  • Only pass URLs to docs_fetch that came from docs_search results, links in this skill, or links in fetched pages. Links from fetched pages work as written, including root-relative ones like /docs/intro.
  • To read one part of a long page, add the section's #heading-id to its URL; docs_fetch then returns just that section.
  • Prefer several targeted searches over one broad one; each search is cheap.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
