threading

threading is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from SecondLifes/delphi-expert. It costs 36 tokens per session (557 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to running work concurrently in Delphi, so several operations can progress at once without freezing the application.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for background work, parallel processing, thread pools, work queues, cancellation, UI updates, and debugging concurrent Delphi code.
Why use it?
It helps avoid blocked user interfaces and unsafe access to shared data when multiple tasks or requests run together.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00036 $0.00557
Opus 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00223
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00007 $0.00111
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00056

Security

Grade A, and why

threading scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Threading & Multi-Threading — Skill

Use this skill when working with threads, asynchronous tasks and parallelism in Delphi projects.

When to Use

  • When performing time-consuming operations without blocking the UI (VCL/FMX)
  • When implementing parallel data processing
  • When creating servers/workers that process concurrent requests
  • When synchronizing access to shared resources
  • When managing thread pools and work queues
  • By implementing graceful thread cancellation

Golden Rule of Threading in Delphi

NEVER access visual components (VCL/FMX) directly from a secondary thread. Use TThread.Synchronize or TThread.Queue to update the UI.

Quick Reference

Simplest way to run something in the background and touch the UI when done:

TTask.Run(
  procedure
  begin
    PerformHeavyCalculation;
    TThread.Queue(nil,
      procedure
      begin
        lblResult.Caption := 'Cálculo concluído';
      end);
  end);

Golden rules: never touch VCL/FMX from a secondary thread (Synchronize/Queue only), never Sleep() on the main thread, protect every shared variable (TCriticalSection/TMonitor/TInterlocked), never call WaitFor on a thread with FreeOnTerminate := True. Full details and code for each are in the reference files below — read the one that matches the task at hand rather than guessing.

Read only the file(s) relevant to the current task — this skill file is intentionally short; the depth lives in these files.

  • basics-and-ppl.md — approach comparison table, TThread (inheritance and CreateAnonymousThread), Synchronize vs Queue, and the PPL (TTask, TTask.Run, TParallel.For, TFuture<T>).
  • thread-safety.md — TCriticalSection, TMonitor, TInterlocked, TThreadList<T>, TMultiReadExclusiveWriteSynchronizer, plus TEvent/TSemaphore signaling.
  • patterns.md — Producer-Consumer with TThreadedQueue, a custom thread pool, cancellation tokens, the generic background-worker-with-result pattern, and a periodic timer thread.
  • debugging-and-checklist.md — anti-patterns to avoid, naming threads for the IDE debugger, and the pre-flight checklist.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

threading is a skill published in the GitHub repository SecondLifes/delphi-expert (3 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 36 tokens to every session and 557 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
