spreadsheets

spreadsheets is a skill for Claude Code from senoff/xlsx-for-ai. It costs 99 tokens per session (780 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A workflow that sends spreadsheet files and links to hosted xlsx-for-ai tools before reading them with local code. It covers Excel files, CSV, TSV, and Google Sheets.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect, compare, clean, convert, or write spreadsheets and to investigate formulas, totals, errors, and stale values.
Why use it?
It preserves formulas, formatting, dates, and recalculated values that can be lost when a workbook is read only as raw data.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00099 $0.00780
Opus 5.5 $0.00040 $0.00312
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00020 $0.00156
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00078

Security

Grade A, and why

spreadsheets scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Not a fault in itself. Listed so you know the mod talks to something, and to what.

3. A file on disk: call `xlsx_upload_link`, run the one curl command in its result to send the file (it only moves the bytes), then pass the returned `file_handle` to any tool. Use this route for every .xls.

How it starts

Spreadsheets: xlsx-for-ai

Use these tools when the answer depends on formula results, on whether saved values are current, or on handing back a working spreadsheet file. With or without formulas, they also clean data, find and redact personal data, scan for hidden content, read styles and validations, compare versions and write a real .xlsx back. All work runs on the hosted xlsx-for-ai server. Nothing from xlsx-for-ai runs on this machine. Data handling: https://xlsx-for-ai.dev/privacy/

A local conversion keeps only the last saved values, which may be missing or stale. These tools recalculate formulas with a real engine, and a function not served yet returns an error saying so. Old .xls files are read directly.

Hand the file over

  1. A link (https, Google Sheets, Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive): pass it as file_url exactly as given. A Google Sheet must be shared as "Anyone with the link can view".
  2. A small CSV or TSV you can read in full: pass file_text plus file_name.
  3. A file on disk: call xlsx_upload_link, run the one curl command in its result to send the file (it only moves the bytes), then pass the returned file_handle to any tool. Use this route for every .xls.
  4. Only if those fail: show the user the upload page link from xlsx_upload_link and ask them to drop the file there.

Never base64-encode a workbook into a tool argument and never pass a local file path.

Pick the tool

  • Read and inspect: xlsx_read, xlsx_list_sheets, xlsx_topology, xlsx_formulas, and the inspectors for styles, tables, names, charts, comments and more.
  • Recalculate and check: xlsx_eval (fresh results, not cached values), xlsx_check, xlsx_doctor, xlsx_validate, csv_check.
  • Compare two versions: xlsx_diff.
  • Clean and fix: xlsx_data_clean and the xlsx_healer_* tools.
  • Write and convert: xlsx_write (formulas kept), xlsx_convert.
  • Privacy: xlsx_pii_scan, xlsx_pii_clean, xlsx_redact, xlsx_vault_scan, xlsx_vault_cure.
  • Integrity and receipts: xlsx_receipt, xlsx_stamp and their verify tools.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

spreadsheets is a skill published in the GitHub repository senoff/xlsx-for-ai (6 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 99 tokens to every session and 780 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-09.
